The Conjuring (2013)
This is one of the rare horror films that really got under my skin. It's spine-tingling, creepy, and atmospherically disturbing. And for once, the ending didn't make me want to throw something at the screen.

Never losing it's mean-spirited tone, this film is incredibly funny, with well defined characters and unexpected punchlines.
garfield2710's rating:

Nebraska (2013)
A beautifully quaint and melancholically truthful film that is just as much heartwarming as it is heartbreaking, though it does briefly meander.
garfield2710's rating:

The Wolverine (2013)
An exciting, very welcomed addition to the X-Men franchise. Besides the villains' plan being a little too complicated, everything else is spot on, the characters, the action scenes, the writing and the visuals.
garfield2710's rating:

It's perhaps an incomplete portrait of a horrific event and the people involved, but the film is still a powerful, daunting and well acted film that celebrates life by putting the audience in the front seat of a real-life tragedy.
garfield2710's rating:

Lone Survivor (2014)
It sometimes goes a bit overboard when dealing with the deaths of the soldiers, but it nevertheless is still a well crafted and acted piece of war filmmaking.
garfield2710's rating:

The Wind Rises (2013)
It focused a little too much on the mechanics of the airplane, instead of the soul, but other than that, this film is a beautiful looking, majestic, heartwarming story that is a fantastic sendoff for Hayao Miyazaki.
garfield2710's rating:

The Call (2013)
A high-concept thriller with strong performances, and scenes so gripping you don't even realize you've been holding your breath.
garfield2710's rating:

Blue Jasmine (2013)
While the story itself is basic, Woody Allen's tight script, and a wonderful performance by Cate Blanchett, help this film stand out.
garfield2710's rating:

Iron Man 3 (2013)
A very entertaining, and emotionally fulfilling superhero movie, with great action and a lot of great scenes, though it is occasionally jumbled.
garfield2710's rating:

Saving Mr. Banks (2013)
This film doesn't quite shake off it's "based on a true story" problems, but it is a funny and insightful film boosted by two great performances.
garfield2710's rating:

The Croods (2013)
A beautifully animated, smart and very funny film that has both intelligence and wit. This is one of the funniest animated films to come out in years.
garfield2710's rating:

Ender's Game (2013)
A charged, challenging film, that treats the audience with respect, and is exciting and poignant to boot.
garfield2710's rating:

42 (2013)
It is an inspirational look into the life of Jackie Robinson, but the lack of some character development makes the film a little cluttered in places, holding off on being a fantastic drama.
garfield2710's rating:

Despicable Me 2 (2013)
An often hilarious, and even touching film, that continues to build the world set up in the original, even if the story is clichรฉ and predictable.
garfield2710's rating:

Even funnier than it's predecessor, it's bigger, crazier, and just laugh-out-loud funny.
garfield2710's rating:

Out of the Furnace (2013)
Though it may be slow at times, the film is a well written, character-driven, revenge thriller, escalated by fantastic performances, and directing.
garfield2710's rating:

Only God Forgives (2013)
Slow though it may be, this is a hypnotizingly haunting and visually impressive experience.
garfield2710's rating:

Philomena (2013)
It's definitely controversial, and maybe isn't as developed as it should be, this is a moving and thought-provoking drama.
garfield2710's rating:

About Time (2013)
The time mechanics are a tad confused, and it's a bit too sentimental, but the film is an emotional thought-provoking tale that celebrates the beauty and fragility of life.
garfield2710's rating:

It may be made up of some poorly defined characters, and is predictable, but that doesn't stop this film from being endearing, poignant, and funny.
garfield2710's rating:

Mama (2013)
It's spine-tingling and has an ingenious concept, but it sometimes delves too much into jump scares. Still, it's creepy and gave me goosebumps, which I give serious props to.
garfield2710's rating:

The plot is occasionally clunky and contrived, but the film is well directed enough, and engaging enough that I cared about the outcome and I enjoyed the film's message.
garfield2710's rating:

This film is far from realistic, but the constant twists and turns, make this an intriguing film, and the action scenes are so fun and gratifying, that it's hard to resist.
garfield2710's rating:

August: Osage County (2013)
A brutally honest portrait of a dysfunctional family, though it suffers from way too many characters and situations.
garfield2710's rating:

Thor: The Dark World (2013)
I will not try to argue that the film doesn't have problems, like an overcomplicated plot and murky backstory, but the action scenes, characters, visual effects, and emotion make this well worth watching.
garfield2710's rating:

Following the books much closer than it's predecessor, this is an exciting adventure that kids and adults can enjoy.
garfield2710's rating:

This film is consistently hilarious, with excellent chemistry between Bullock and McCarthy.
garfield2710's rating:

Carrie (2013)
Fans of the original movie and novel will probably argue this remake wasn't necessary, but I personally found this dark tragedy to be compelling and spine-tingling.
garfield2710's rating:

Enough Said (2013)
It's a sweet and frank romance that feels complex and interesting, despite little original ground.
garfield2710's rating:

It gives action fans exactly what their looking for. It's exciting, boosts good performances, and has just enough intelligence to make the bloody action scenes all the more entertaining.
