Top [x] lists!

robelanator 16 years, 7 months ago at Oct 3 14:19 -
Let's document some of the various lists on film around the web. These lists have a been a great resource for someone like myself who is not a film student and doesn't have cinemaphile friends to recommend essential films to see.

Of course, IMDB (the Internet Movie DataBase) has a whole slew of "Top" lists, by decade, by genre, etc. Their Top 250 is pretty darn good, even if the nature of its voting system gives more weight to recent films than older ones.

1000 Movies to See Before You Die. VERY extensive mix of foreign and domestic, current and classic. It's really a meta-list that's compiled using other "top" lists.

Filmsite.org has a Top 300 list that's pretty good. What's awesome about it, though, is that most of the movies include historical information and really extensive plot summaries including large chunks of dialogue. Apart from the lis, this site is also a great resource in that it explains film genres, goes over film history by decade, etc.

Roger Ebert's Great Movies series has a lot of well-respected titles, as you might expect given his fame (or infamy, if you prefer). Each film includes a short essay by Ebert on why he considers the movie great.

Please post additional lists in this thread as you come across them.

Channel 4 (here in the UK) has broadcast plenty of top 50 and 100 movie, music and tv lists over the past few years. Here are a couple of links I managed to find on their site:

In 2005, to celebrate 100 years of Chinese cinema, the Hong Kong Film Awards chose the Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures of all time. It's a real nice list, which includes all kinds of films from classics and art house to action blockbusters. It's very Hong Kong centered (60%) and actually has 103 titles, but I ain't complaining.

I love film noir, and IMDB's top 50 film noirs was helpful to get me started. If you want to delve deeper, They Shoot Pictures has a great list: 250 Quintessential Film Noirs. They also have lists of further noir titles, and a huge collection of noir related links, including other noir lists.

That Chinese list is awesome! Thanks for posting it.

Update: The Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures

The wikipedia list is a bit colourless, so I made a list here at Listal, complete with posters, trailers and film clips. I had a lot of fun compiling this:

I just downloaded the 700 MB avi versions of "Panic in the Streets" and "She Done Him Wrong" from archive.org, and the picture quality is really good. So I'm urging everybody to check it out!

I use a shitty laptop too... Any case, you can watch these titles online in stream also, but the screen at archive.org is rather small. It's worth checking out these titles on Google video as well, which is more suitable for online watching, and has some public domain titles that aren't on archive.org yet (but probably will be), like "The Third Man", "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and "Night Tide".

So.. These aren't strictly "Top Whatever" lists but I couldn't find a thread for general custom movie lists...

Classic 80s Teen Movies Would love any idea for additions others might have (Should I include the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street? movies)
Friday the 13th Series

awesome lists, voxy

I'd just add the first of each series (friday, nightmare, halloween), and if people click on them, they get those other full lists. that way you dont clutter up the classic 80s list.

or try cross-list advertising as I've done in my nintendo-related series:

Good idea! I figured I'd add the first of each, but the cross-promo I hadn't thought of.

or better yet, rather than cross-promote it on the RIGHT side in the description area, cross-promote it directly in the note of the entry.

I've done something similar, with links to the game downloads, but if you can do something like this for dscription for Nightmare on Elm Street.

"This is the original movie - for a list of all sequels (and prequels) that started with this film, please check out the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Series (and make it a link, and maybe even add the B brackets code to make it appear in bold and stand out.

Hall of Fame: Product Placement

I've started this one and need input as well. If there is any product placement in a movie that is so intrusive it stands out like a sore thumb, let me know by leaving a comment on that list.

I'm not talking about a guy holding a Starbucks cup, or a sign in background that says 'Nikon'; i'm talking about where script was written to include a certain product placement into the film for likely advertising benefits.

He's living in Manhattan, not the former soviet union! The cars are going to have markings and the restaurants are going to be private corporations. It makes it so much more human seeing him use everyday items like that. Just my two pence.

Well, to me, there's a clear distinction between filming in a normal world vs panning out to make sure the entire 'McDonalds' logo is visible, or using any car to drive around vs filming a car from tons of angles making it very clear to the audience that its the brand new and exciting Ford Mustang.
