McMurphy, a man with several assault convictions to his name, finds himself in jail once again. This time, the charge is statutory rape when it turns out that his girlfriend had lied about being eighteen, and was, in fact, fifteen (or, as McMurphy puts it, "fifteen going on thirty-five"). Rather than spend his time in jail, he convinces the guards that he's crazy enough to need psychiatric care and is sent to a hospital. He fits in frighteningly well, and his different point of view actually begins to cause some of the patients to progress. Nurse Ratched becomes his personal cross to bear as his resistance to the hospital routine gets on her nerves.

My favorite Jack Nicholson film.
Jack's performance in this movie is not of a self-centered man of a salty background who becomes overly or angelically transformed, but as someone steeped in his own irresponsibility, with a hard to reach ability to care that is gradually bought up to the surface by the only type of people who could cause such a subtle & internal catalyst: a group of guys who are crazier than he is.

the book
must see
This, by far, is in my opinion, Nicholson’s best performance. When you have a great cast and a wonderful director, it’s hard to go wrong! A definite must see.

Excellent book and movie...
Regardless of that... the movie is still amazing. Jack Nicholson is the man, although every single actor in this movie is really solid. Louise Fletcher honestly makes you hate her character so much, she does an amazing job. Each one is exactly how I would've portrayed them in the book. Overall, yeah, one of my favorites of all time.
