(OK) Pretty, really pretty, pure musical ballet almost going to abstraction; each tale is independent but has a romatic agonic feeling, as the doll torn to pieces or tge literally agonic singer...

An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and since it was available on Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though it might not belong to their famous movies, it was still probably one of their most ambitious productions. In this film adaptation of the Offenbach opera, a young poet named Hoffman broods over his failed romances. First, his affair with the beautiful Olympia is shattered when he realizes that she is really a mechanical woman designed by a scientist. Next, he believes that a striking prostitute loves him, only to find out she was hired to fake her affections by the dastardly Dapertutto. Lastly, a magic spell claims the life of his final lover.

"FORMAT: 35mm CONDITION: ★★★★★ NOTES: New BFI print, my last screening in the Powell + Pressburger season. Aside from the point when we first see Hoffmann and Antonia together, this is practically spotless on its first public run, even though the BFI kind of biffed its presentation (forgetting to dim the backlight, shift the first five reels into position at the start and turn projector B on). DATE: December 9th 2023 CINEMA: BFI LOCATION: Southbank"

Well, even though it might not belong to their famous movies, it was still probably one of their most ambitious productions. However, even if I really did admire the work done, I have to admit that I had an incredibly hard time to connect with the damned thing though. In fact, it wasn’t the first movie adaptation of an opera I have seen. Indeed, I have also seen ‘The Magic Flute’ which was directed by Kenneth Branagh, even if it was a seriously obscure movie which was never even released in the US. Anyway, basically, I have never been a huge fan of musicals in general and opera” read more
