Bizzare and yet a little boring

The Happiness of the Katakuris might best be described as Agatha Christie meets Beetlejuice, and then throw in the Sound of Music. If that sounds like it probably wouldn't work, it sorta doesn't. The musical numbers tend to be very surreal and luckily short. And although there were a few good laughs, and more chuckles, I was glad when the two hour long movie was over. The locations are excelle... read more

It is a sad fact that many people who love Takashi Miike films love the director not for his unique insight, his playful narratives, his genre busting, or his quirky sense of humour but for the visceral stomp that Miike has shown himself to be more than capable of providing.

I say this is a sad fact as in many ways one of the finest talents to have emerged from Japan is often times ... read more

The Katakuri family has just opened their guest house in the mountains. Unfortunately their first guest commits suicide and in order to avoid trouble they decide to bury him in the backyard. Things get way more complicated when their second guest, a famous sumo wrestler, dies while having sex with his underage girlfriend and the grave behind the house starts to fill up more and more.

" Date: 8/31/2020 Viewed: Blu-Ray (Arrow Video) Re-Watch Note: After watching Ichi the Killer, I decided to revisit another movie from Takashi Miike and I have the Arrow Blu-Ray of this movie sitting on my shelf for over a year now collecting dust. I haven't seen this movie in the last 13 years and I wanted to see it if it still holds up. After watching this movie again, I still really enjoy it. The Happiness of the Katakuris is a fun surreal horror musical comedy in my opinion. The most famou"

Film Journal 2019 (225 movies items)

"Significantly more earnest and heartfelt than I expected, The Happiness of the Katakuris can be seen as a starting point to a number of not only Miike's work but a clear inspiration for the future works of folk like Sion Sono. Many have attempted to create a film by creating a patchwork of "crazy shit" but the reason for this film working and so, so, so many of the others not, is that there is a consistency if not in the literal story then at least in message and tone. Despite the claymation int"

" Familiar Actors: Shinji Takeda Ken'ichi Endô and Yoshiyuki Morishita True Rating: 5.4/10 Body Count- 15 Note: I have been wanting to see this for awhile. I love Takashi Miike's work and could never find it. It was an interesting watch, but ultimately ended up being quite disappointing. I was told there were zombies which had only one scene where they did nothing. It's a strange mashup of musical, horror, claymation, and WTF moments. Many things happen that don't really make sense which I "

October 2017 Horrorfest (45 movies items)

"First viewing - Oct. 31st So on Halloween I narrowed my options on Prime to Argento's Inferno, Ganja & Hess, and this film which bears a horror tag. Thankfully I also knew from its reputation that there'd be some claymation and it was a musical, otherwise I might have given up on it early. The whole film is an oddball wonder, and I can't help but respect Miike for making the damn thing. I appreciated the film and especially its messages, and I'm certainly glad I watched it. However, it wasn't h"
