Tales That Witness Madness

An anthology of horrors, Tales That Witness Madness is minor to the point of anemia with one-note, passive performances, predictable stories, and yet it’s still entertaining in its limited way. There’s a few moments of deadpan humor in here, but this strength is frustratingly underdeveloped, like so much of the film.   Telling four stories as flashbacks as the primary characters are stuck i... read more

Description: Essentially a reworking of their earlier omnibus Asylum, this is another anthology of pulp horror tales from Amicus, this one helmed by the ever-reliable Freddie Francis. It features a quartet of eerie vignettes involving four patients in the care of psychiatrist Dr. Tremayne (Donald Pleasence), who is attempting to justify his strange theories to a colleague (Jack Hawkins, who died shortly after his scenes were filmed) by explaining the horrific events that drove the patients to their current state. The first tale centers on a young boy (Russell Lewis), whose parents' constant squabbling prompts him to conjure an imaginary tige ... (more)

Hit Or Miss? Good Or Bad? 2019 Movies Watched (461 movies items)

"Dr. Nicholas arrives at the insane asylum run by the eminent Professor Tremayne to hear his absolutely bizarre theories as to how four of his patients ended up there. This Amicus horror anthology is rather silly but still enjoyable. The first story deals with a boy who has invisible tiger as a friend with his parents not believing him until huge claw marks start appearing on doors of their house. It's a pretty decent story. The second tale is about a man who has bought an old picture and a penn"

There’s a few moments of deadpan humor in here, but this strength is frustratingly underdeveloped, like so much of the film.   Telling four stories as flashbacks as the primary characters are stuck in a mental institution, Tales That Witness Madness gives them unhappy home and interior lives to explain their psychological and supernatural scarring. The first story is about a little boy with an imaginary friend named Mr. Tiger, who is maybe not so imaginary. The story culminates with Mr. Tiger, revealed as an actual tiger, killing the boy’s frigid mother and uninvolved father while he passiv” read more
