Review of Pocahontas

Underwhelming. That was my first thought after finishing Pocahontas. Granted, my expectations may have been a bit high, but this IS renaissance Disney after all. Frankly, Pocahontas is not one of Disney's greats, or even one of their goods. It's a mediocre film with some marvelous musical numbers placed between uninteresting filler.

Loosely based off of the real story of Pocahontas,... read more

Best Fictional Historical Movie Ever!

Despite the fact that this movie is more inaccurate than internet rumors regarding the assassination of Osama bin Laden, it's still pretty gosh darn good. The art, like all Disney movies, is exceptional, and the music just rocks meh face off. The story moves well and although it may be a bit traumatic for youngsters, it's still pretty gosh darn great.

Sometimes, even when you don't expect much fidelity to actual events, Hollywood will really surprise you with the amount of bullshit they'll pile up and the coats of whitewashing they'll use. Pocahontas has long been one of those types of films for me. When people proclaim that Disney traffics in churning out one bland concoction after another in which there is only true love as the answer to al... read more

Description: Capt. John Smith leads a rag-tag band of English sailors & soldiers to the New World to plunder its riches for England (or, more precisely, for Governor Ratcliffe, who comes along for the ride). Meanwhile, in this "New World," Chief Powhatan has pledged his daughter, Pocahontas, to be married to the village's greatest warrior. Pocahontas, however, has other ideas. She has seen a vision of a spinning arrow, a vision she believes tells her change is coming. Her life does indeed change when the English ship lands near her village. Between Ratcliffe, who believes the "savages" are hiding the gold he expected ... (more)

My Top 10 Least Favourite Disney Animated Features (10 movies items)

"Pocahontas isn't bad, but it is terribly flawed. I guess this was the beginning of Disney trying to start a new trend: taking more mature subjects and making them entertaining for kids. In this case, history. But Pocahontas makes the fatal mistake of sugarcoating it, talking down to its audience. Solving the language barrier through magic, for example. And reducing the leader of the white men to pure greed, I believe needs no comment. For what it's worth, the songs and animation are good, and th"

Movie Reviews (701-750) (50 movies items)

" Disney has drawn Pocahontas into a memorable heroine and is recommended viewing to all those people who thought "Avatar" was an original story. Maybe a little too serious for the smallest kids and it lacks good songs and a strong climax. "
