Muriel's Wedding is truly nothing more than a Ugly Duckling story, but you know you are in for a bit of fun when you are see the welcome sign for the town of Porpoise Spit. Muriel is not only a frump, she's pathetic and really you can't blame people for not liking her. Not that you care much for the others as well. They are all hysterically funny caricatures. But after enough times of being to... read more

"When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I've met you and moved to Sydney, I haven't listened to one Abba song. That's because my life is as good as an Abba song. It's as good as Dancing Queen."

During conversations regarding the greatest Australian filmic exports, Muriel's Wedding will almost certainly be mentioned. This... read more

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick. Still, I remember it quite well when it was released. If I recall it correctly, my sister saw it in the movie theater when it was released and since she was really enthusiast, I was quite eager to check the damned thing. Basically, even though I wasnโ€™t exactly blown by the whole thing, I have to admit that it was still a fairly enjo... read more

Muriel finds life in Porpoise Spit, Australia dull and spends her days alone in her room listening to Abba music and dreaming of her wedding day. Slight problem, Muriel has never had a date. Then she steals some money to go on a tropical vacation, meets a wacky friend, changes her name to Mariel, and turns her world upside down.

50 Moments of Cinematic Wonder (50 movies items)

"MURIEL'S WEDDING - I'M NOT ALONE, I'M WITH MURIEL Everyone loves those moments in films when the bullies get their comeuppance but while they tend to be satisfying to watch in a punch-the-air way, few could be said to inspire a true sense of wonder. P.J. Hogan's comedy 'Muriel's Wedding', however, adds a new wrinkle to the formula which makes it not only satisfying but thoroughly empowering. Toni Collette plays Muriel, the unpopular member of a small clique of old schoolfriends who ultimately d"

30 From 94: My Favorite Films From 1994 (30 movies items)

"Muriel is overweight, socially awkward and a pathological day dreamer. One day, after meeting a fellow outcast, she begins taking steps to improve her situation. Using her pathological day dreams as a blue print, she starts by moving outta her small town into the big city and then changing her name from Muriel to Mariel. And it's all uphill from there. That is, from Muriel's/Mariel's point of view it is. To the rest of the world, it's a downhill spiral full of delusion, deception, and lots 'n' l"
