The debut feature of Kore-eda (one-time documentarist and director of the widely admired “Afterlife” and “Nobody Knows”) is one of a small, precious number of films for which i have felt lovesick. Maborosi’s story is superficially simple: affected by the death of her grandmother and her husband’s inexplicable suicide, a young Osaka woman starts new married life, along with her son, in ... read more
A young woman's husband apparently commits suicide without warning or reason, leaving behind his wife and infant. Yumiko remarries and moves from Osaka to a small fishing village, yet continues to search for meaning in a lonely world.

" Date: 12/27/2020 Viewed: Youtube First Viewing Note: So far, I only have seen a few movies from Hirokazu Kore-eda and he has already become a favorite director of mine. Maborosi is yet another hit from Hirokazu Kore-ed for me because this movie was fantastic. This movie is both beautiful and depressing at the same time. You can tell that Hirokazu Kore-eda was inspired by Yasujiro Ozu when making this movie because this movie has a similar vibe to his other movies such as Late Spring (1949), "
