Jack Andrews (Kilmer) owns a rundown private detective agency in Reno, and owes the mob a ton of money in gambling debts. He needs the cash, so he takes on a job from a young woman (Whalley-Kilmer) asking him to fake her own death, supposedly to get away from an abusive husband. Little does he know that she's on the run after stealing a suitcase full of money from the mob.
