“En este documental corto, Luis Buñuel se adentra en Las Hurdes, unas comarcas rurales muy lejanas de las grandes civilizaciones de España, en la provincia de Cáceres.
El tema central de este documental no es el folclore de estas comarcas, sino el hambre, el subdesarrollo al que están sometidos sus habitantes donde incluso el pan les era desconocido. Buñuel no se tienta en representar de manera directa la precariedad en la que viven estos hurdanos, en una región donde la esperanza de vida es igual de pobre que en la de un país africano. Un poblado donde su mayor fuente de ingresos fue la pensión proporcionada por el gobierno para el cuidado de los huérfanos. I mean, sure, it is a decent early Buñuel, no doubt about it, but if it would have directed by someone else, I’m pretty sure it would have been completely forgotten by now. Still, it’s interesting that Buñuel would start his career with a hyper-realistic documentary when he will be eventually known as one of the most surrealist directors that ever worked"
