"Points of anticipation: Jean-Marc Vallée directing. Gyllenhaal acting. Result: #27 on "Best Movies of 2016" list. Trailer: "
“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jake Gyllenhaal, I was really eager to check it out. Well, even though the whole thing had some potential, I wasn’t really convinced, to be honest. Basically, in my opinion, it was one of these movies that try to be original but actually end up being rather random. Of course, you might argue that life is pretty random but, in this case, the damned thing was just too damned quirky for my taste. Furthermore, I did like the burgeoning relationship going on between Gyllenhaal’s and Watts’s characters but, instead of developing this relationship, they put the focus on her teenage son which was a mistake. Indeed, it was just so lazy, generic and predictable to see this rebellious but actually really cool” read more
"First viewing - March 15th I can't recall now why I skipped Demolition during its theatrical run. Maybe it was the reviews, which weren't very favorable as I recall. Whatever the case I'm glad I finally caught up with it because it wound up being worthwhile. I appreciated the fresh approach to following this character as he deals with grief and loss. There's one scene in particular where Gyllenhaal dances around in public that's sublime and makes it more than worth the time investment. Naturall"
" DVD- 1hr. 41min. First Viewing Despite it's extreme over-familiarity and less than expert scripting, Demolition is still a solid film with strong direction and another top-notch performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. Without his performance and director Jean-Marc Vallée's style, the movie wouldn't work. Sure, it's more style than substance, but when the style is this good, I can't complain. "
"Jake Gyllenhaal is probably one of the most underrated actors of this generation and in every movie I've seen him in over the past 10 years he's given an extraordinary performance and this movie is no different. It's about the story of a man who loses his wife in a car accident. His way of grieving is what the movie narrates. He realises that he's not able feel a thing when everyone around does, so he decides to search for the answers and so his bizarre journey begins. The casting was good, but "
"2016 Gyllenhaal takes a lot of showers in this damn good film, also starring the fantastic Naomi Watts. The script is engaging and the pacing prevents any outside thoughts from creeping in."
