Castle Wolfenstein - Macintosh
When creating this list, I assumed Wolfenstein 3D was the birth of the series, but I soon discovered that the real start began way back in 1981. It was 2D with rudimentary graphics, but the gameplay of going thru castle wolfentein, killing nazis, and taking treasure along the way would be the inspiration behind iD software's mega hit a decade later.

The original 'Castle Wolfenstein' was first released on the Apple II in 1981, and in 1983 ported to the Commodore 64 (the premier PC gaming platform in the early 80s) as well as DOS and Atari 800.

It was designed by Silas Warner, an employee of Muse Software. Muse closed its doors in 1987 and sold naming rights for 'Wofenstein' to iD Software.

Castle Wolfenstein - Commodore 64
Released in 1983, the Commodore 64 port of 'Castle Wolfenstein' was the most popular version, thanks to its massive market share. After all, the Commodore was the best selling personal computer in those days, selling 400,000 units per month for several years.

If you're looking for an original copy of this game, the C64 version is where you should start.

Wolfenstein 3D - PC Games
The year is 1992, and iD Software develops a revolutionary game that would start up one of the most popular genres in gaming history - the First Person Shooter. And what better way to do this than by killing Nazis in Castle Wolfenstein.
