Asterix at the Olympic Games (2008)

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the two previous Asterix movies. It was even boring at times. I also prefer Christian Clavier in the role of my favourite Gaulois.

Agelastos petra (2000)

The calm voice of the narrator and his poetic words, carriers of all sort of information about the Greek industrial city of Eleusis, hypnotized me during the whole movie and made me swung between the glorious past and the depressing present and future of the land. It wasn't important at all that the images of this documentary were a little blurry and there weren't any impressive visual effects.

Dark City (1998)

I finally saw this surprisingly good movie. The story is very intriguing and the visual effects in the dark, fantastic, dystopian world are magical. The film noir atmosphere of the film is very evocative.

Watchmen (2009)

This is the only based on a graphic novel movie that gave me food for thought for days and didn't make me focusing only on the visual effects and the action.
I can't tell if the film is a good adaptation of the graphic novel, because I haven't read it yet. Maybe in the future...

I liked this one! OK, it's not the most original movie I have ever seen, a life changer or anything like that, I had good time watching it though. I laughed with a few clever lines and some scenes moved me. The contrasting lifestyle and the very different attitude towards life of the two main female characters are nicely given in the film.

Irresistible (2006)

I didn't have any plans to watch a movie on TV that night and I didn't have any info about Irresistible, but I stopped channel zapping when I saw a scene with Susan Sarandon and Sam Neill at the beginning of the film. Well, are two good actors -that I'm not a great fan of, but I respect a lot- able to save an average thriller movie and make it look like a masterpiece? I'm afraid not!

The Page Turner (2006)

I really like french films, because their ostensibly simple stories usually focus on people and their feelings without "too much noise". This thriller is very interesting from the first until the last minute, because it matches this criteria.

Flight of the Red Balloon (2008)

It seemed to be a promising film, but it finally proved rather boring. I never learned many things about the background of the characters and I didn't have a "connection" with them. I can't blame the actors for this, but the scenarist and director. According to my opinion, it's a movie that has no start, middle and end.

Rocco and His Brothers (1960)

This movie, as a whole, is too melodramatic for my taste, but I can't turn my back on the great performances by all the actors and actresses, the wonderful direction and the moving story.
I'm impressed by the dynamic acting and presence of Katina Paxinou. It's the first time that I saw her in a movie.

Respiro: Grazia's Island (2002)

I have mixed feelings about this movie from Italy. I loved everything about the atmosphere of the mediterranean island: the sun, the sea, the landscapes... The story was interesting enough and rather touching, but the ending left me a strange taste and, up to a point, the movie reminded me of Malèna by Giuseppe Tornatore.
I believe that Valeria Golino, who plays the main female character, is a very beautiful woman, but a rather weak actress, but in this film, she gave a good performance. Also good were the performances by the young protagonists.

I have to watch this movie one more time, just to decide if I like it or not and rate it accordingly.

The Cassandra Crossing (1976)

An average disaster movie with a very good cast! The combination disaster movie and good cast was usual in the '70s. The story here is rather good at the beginning, but soon it becomes strange and chaotic. The visual effects aren't the best I have seen in a movie of this genre. I don't compare them of course with the computerised effects of the modern disaster movies. I didn't like the chemistry between Sophia Loren and Richard Harris.

Silkwood (1984)

Silkwood is something like the Erin Brockovich movie without the happy ending and with a better actress than Julia Roberts in the leading role. Good performances by Kurt Russell, Cher and the majority of the actors.

Marvin's Room (1997)

Just an OK movie about the hows and whys of the conflicts between the members of a family, a subject touched by many other movies with much better results. The bright cast and the good performances add points, but I don't think that this fact can make me watch the film again in the near future or remember it for a long time, because there is something missing in all the other factors -story, direction, scenario.

The Illusionist (2010)

After The Triplets of Belleville, this is the second film by Sylvain Chomet that I have seen so far and I must say that I really like the melancholic atmosphere and the quite original style of the animations in both of them.
Just as in The Triplets of Belleville, there is no much speech in this film either and the great music plays an important role by "investing" the moves, actions and expressions of the characters and the lovely designed landscapes and backgrounds. Once again, Sylvain Chomet focuses on the de cadance of artists and the story is very moving. The pace here is quite slow, so if you like action, you better pass this one.

Porco Rosso (1992)

I loved it! The 80 minutes of this movie are rich in strong emotions, great ideals, action, humour, beautiful images and melodies. The problem? Only 80 minutes!

East Palace, West Palace (1996)

There are many movies with homosexuality and the taboos of the societies as their subject, but not many that come from China. This is the reason I chose to watch Behind the Forbidden City (you can find it also as East Palace, West Palace).
The director handles a sensitive issue with seriousness, but the film does not escape the clichés that someone can find in many movies with similar theme and it fails to convey strong emotions as the combination of narration, flashbacks and a few poetic moments doesn't work well. For me, the greatest asset of this movie is the performance by the two actors in the leading roles.

Here I list the movies I watched for the first time in 2011, in every possible way (cinema, TV, DVD, VHS, Internet).
I wrote a few words about my first impression from each movie. This is also a way to explain why I rated a movie the way I rated. Besides this, I'm just curious to see if I'll have the same opinion about a film after a possible second viewing in the future.
