Hiroshima Mon amour (1959)
What is it about? A French young woman has spent the night with a japanese man, at Hiroshima where she went for the shooting of a film about peace. He reminds her of the first man she loved. It was during World War II, and he was a German soldier.
Quote:"You're destroying me. You're good for me."
What is it about? In a devastated Paris in the aftermath of WWIII, The few surviving humans begin researching time travel, hoping to send someone back to the pre-war world for food, supplies and maybe a solution to their dire position. One man is haunted by a vague childhood memory that will prove fateful.
Quote:"This time he is close to her, he speaks to her. She welcomes him without surprise. They are without memories, without plans. Time builds itself painlessly around them. Their only landmarks are the flavour of the moment they are living and the markings on the walls."
What is it about? A harried movie director retreats into his memories and fantasies.
Note: Honestly, it is not my favorite movie directed by Fellini but it is probably his most poetic one.

The King and the Mockingbird (1980)
What is it about? The story begins when one night the King's portrait comes to life and falls in love with the portrait of a shepherdess, who in turn loves the portrait of a chimney sweep next to her. The King's portrait kills the real king and pursues the fugitive star-crossed lovers, who use the Mockingbird's help to evade the dangers and obstacles on their path to freedom.

What is it about? A man wanders out of the desert not knowing who he is. His brother finds him, and helps to pull his memory back of the life he led before he walked out on his wife and son four years before. As his memory returns, he makes contact with various people from his past.

What is it about? A collection of tales based upon the actual dreams of director Akira Kurosawa.
Quote: "A scene that looks like a painting doesn't make a painting. If you look closely, all of nature has its beauty.
What is it about? Axel tags fish in New York. He's happy there, but a messenger arrives to bring him to Arizona for his uncle's wedding. It's a ruse to get Axel into the family business. In Arizona, Axel meets two odd women: vivacious, needy, and plagued by neuroses and familial discord. He gets romantically involved with one, while the other, rich but depressed, plays accordion tunes to her pet turtles.
Quote: "If you believe in your dreams, you could be sure that any force, a tornado, a volcano or a typhoon, wouldn't be able to knock you out of love; because love exists on its own."
The Scent of Green Papaya (1994)
What is it about? Mui is a maid and goes to live and work for a pianist who has a fiancée. The pianist and Mui have a relationship, and he teaches her how to read.
What is it about? Ruby, a young woman, arrives in a Florida resort town during the off season to make a fresh start. She gets work as a sales clerk in a souvineer shop.
Quote: "I heard that Hell is when all your dreams come true."
Chungking Express (1994)
What is it about? Two stories, two lovelorn cops, two objects of desire. all shot in a breathless kaleidoscope of color and hand-held camera work to create a mesmerizing portrait of Hong Kong in the 1990s.
Note: Pretty much all the movies directed by Wong Kar Wai could be on this list but this one is my favorite. Other suggestions : 2046, Fa yeung nin wa (In the mood for love), Chun gwong cha sit (Happy together).

What is it about? On the run after murdering a man, accountant William Blake encounters a strange Indian named "Nobody" who prepares him for his journey into the spiritual world.
Quote: "Every night and every morn, some to misery are born. Every morn and every night, some are born to sweet delight. Some are born to sweet delight; some are born to endless night."
What is it about? Three stories of undying love: Bound by a long red cord, a young couple wanders in search of something they have forgotten. An aging yakuza returns to the park where he used to meet his long-lost girlfriend. A disfigured pop star confronts the phenomenal devotion of her biggest fan.
Note: Pretty much all the (good) movies directed by Takeshi Kitano could be on this list. This one, though not my favorite Kitano movie, is the most poetic one. Other suggestions : Kikujirô no natsu (Kikujiro), Hana-bi (Fireworks), Kizzu ritân (Kids return), Sonatine, 3-4 x jûgatsu (Boiling Point).
What is it about? This film takes place in an isolated lake, where an old monk lives on a small floating temple. The wise master has also a young boy with him that teaches to become a monk. And we watch as seasons and years pass by.
Note: Honestly, I'm not a fan of Kim Ki-duk's movies but I have to recognize that he makes very poetic movies, especially this one. Other suggestions : Soom, Hwal (The Bow), Bin-Jip (3-iron).

What is it about? After making a misjudged advance towards her mother's boyfriend, 16-year-old Heidi flees her home for the small Australian ski town of Jindabyne. She manages to find a place to live and a job at a convenience store.

The New World (2006)
What is it about? A drama about explorer John Smith and the clash between Native Americans and English settlers in the 17th century. During an armed exploration, Smith is captured, but spared when the chief's favorite daughter Pocahontas pleads for the stranger who soon becomes her lover and learns to love their naive 'savage' way of harmonious life.
Quote: "If only I could go down that river. To love her in the wild, forget the name of Smith. I should tell her. Tell her what? It was just a dream. I am now awake."
What is it about? A lonely shoe salesman and an eccentric performance artist struggle to connect in this unique take on contemporary life.
Quote: "I don't want to have to do this living. I just walk around. I want to be swept off my feet, you know? I want my children to have magical powers. I am prepared for amazing things to happen. I can handle it."
What is it about? In a fantasy world of opposing kingdoms, a 15-year old girl must find the fabled MirrorMask in order to save the kingdom and get home.
Quote: "You may think I'm a hardhearted black sock, but underneath this dark woolly exterior is a naked pink foot."
The Fountain (2006)
What is it about? Spanning over one thousand years, and three parallel stories, The Fountain is a story of love, death, spirituality, and the fragility of our existence in this world.
Quote: "Every shadow no matter how deep is threatened by morning light."
What is it about? In a hospital on the outskirts of 1920s Los Angeles, an injured stuntman begins to tell a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken arm, a fantastical story about 5 mythical heroes. Thanks to his fractured state of mind and her vivid imagination, the line between fiction and reality starts to blur as the tale advances.
Quote: "Are you trying to save my soul?"
What is it about? The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence.

The Red Turtle (2016)
What is it about? The dialogue-less film follows the major life stages of a castaway on a deserted tropical island populated by turtles, crabs and birds.
