Parallel worlds is a general theme found in works of Science Fiction and Fantasy. The idea of parallels worlds and dimensions lying next to our own and occasionally connecting is among the oldest and earliest defined themes in speculative fiction, and it has therefore been present in cinema since its early beginnings, with early film adapations of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz being made as early as the first quarter of the 20th century, with both The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1910) and the more well-known The Wizard of Oz (1925). The influence of C. S. Lewis' successful The Chronicles of Narnia series helped to popularize the theme in fantasy literature and cinema.

Various, smaller themes have emerged from the more general idea of parallel worlds, with many of them making it to cinema as well. These include the common perception of a parallel world as a hidden, but still accesible dimension that exists alongside our usual world, with significant or minor differences to the normal world. Such differences may be expressed in the existence of magic or magical creatures, futuristic technologies or just a different chain of events that led to an alternate history. Other works have instead focused on the far less common idea of a multiverse, the hypothesized existence of an infinite number of universes existing next to each other.
