This is the first movie I watched as a kid that really got me thinking about dialogue and writing, as opposed to merely the visual aspects of movies. Of course it's not incredibly deep, but it was and still is an excellent movie.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Fight Club (1999)
There are probably many people that would say this movie changed their life. So if I said the same thing, it would seem cliche. But this movie really hit me hard at age 18, and is worth watching many times.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Imagine seeing this for the first time as you're just beginning to discover yourself... I had to see this movie three times to really let it sink in.
Joseph Grey's rating:
I watched this film, a DVD of a friend of mine at the time. He told me it was a must see, and he wasn't wrong. This film puts a twist on your standard war movie, showing you the psychology of war.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Event Horizon (1997)
This is one of the few "space horror" movies that really made me uncomfortable, in a good way. I remember being scared to go to sleep that night, and that's when I knew the film had done its job.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
My first experience with a Tarantino film was Reservoir Dogs. I think that's the best place to start. Great writing, acting, pacing, action... my favorite of Tarantino's movies.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Pulp Fiction (1994)
I have watched this movie at least ten times. The characters are really interesting, as is the direction, and out of sequence events.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Snatch (2000)
Sadly, I didn't know about "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" when I watched this movie. Still, Snatch was extremely entertaining, fast paced, and fun.
Joseph Grey's rating:
I read the novel right around the same time I watched the movie. Don't bother with "Queen of the Damned," this movie was much better.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Platoon (1986)
Platoon was a movie I rented from the school library. I watched it by myself in one of the viewing rooms. It was a movie that made me feel for the characters, and the situation of the soldiers and the people caught in the middle.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Blow (2001)
This movie really depressed me. But that was because I was invested in the story and characters. This is a good movie, based on a true story.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
There's a lot of slo-mo action and fighting with crazy special effects... But I didn't really like this movie.

Joseph Grey's rating:
The Royal Tenenbaums (2002)
I really loved this movie when seeing it the first time. I still like it, and look forward to getting around to seeing "The Life Aquatic."
Joseph Grey's rating:
Waking Life (2002)
If you want to see something more artistic than linear, this is it. I really enjoyed this movie, and still do.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Movies that center around drug addiction usually aren't happy stories. It took a while to recover from seeing this movie. It was extremely well done, and very moving.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Trainspotting (1996)
Trainspotting was a movie I'm glad I watched when I did. I think I was just old enough to understand the story, but young enough to enjoy it. A good movie.
Joseph Grey's rating:
I'm not a fan of floating while running-featherweight fight sequences. But this movie had an interesting story, with characters that I cared about.
Joseph Grey's rating:
Entropy (1999)
An interesting movie if you haven't seen this one. It centers around a Music Video director and his work, relationships, and neurosis. An enjoyable story.
Joseph Grey's rating:
The Crying Game (1993)
I didn't know anything about this movie before I watched it for the first time, so I had no preconceived notions going in. An interesting movie.
Joseph Grey's rating:
This was my favorite movie to watch out of all these. It remains one of my favorite. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it.
Joseph Grey's rating:
American Beauty (1999)
I saw this movie once during the tail end of my Freshman year. I didn't give this movie much credit, probably because of the quality of the other movies I was watching at the time. I think I should watch this one again.
Joseph Grey's rating:
This is a list of some of the movies I watched for the first time in my first year of college. It was as much a film festival as it was an education.
