I really love it when a movie just falls in your lap and it's exactly the movie you need to see. I can even forgive that it's a little long-winded on the back end because it really is just such a likable movie that rings very true to me. I love this cast, (likable Zac Efron, where have you been hiding?). The story feels very personal. It is written and directed by its star, Josh Radnor, and he is pretty fantastic in all respects. It's also my first experience with Elizabeth Olsen, and she really does deserve the hype. She's such a natural, believable actress. I don't know if I'd recommend this movie to everybody, but for those with a more liberal arts slanted mind, and also those who, despite their age, just don't quite feel like an adult, this is probably one you should check out. A great discovery at the end of the year.

Natural without ever feeling tedious or dull. The characters are humans, charming and flawed. "Mumblecore" (I kind of hate that term) at its best. It's not an easy task for a movie like this to not ring false in any sort of way, and I think it just about succeeds. Also, it's rare that a movie ends exactly when I want to end. Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie.

At least the shorts are still good. It may not be my favorite Pixar short, and it's not even close to Paperman (the short attached to Wreck-It Ralph that I am in love with), but it's still a cute little story. It doesn't knock my socks off, but it's good for a smile.

Brave, I don't hate you. I'm just disappointed in you. Only two years I was praising Pixar as one of the greatest movie studios out there. Toy Story 3 was absolutely brilliant, and I was looking forward to whatever else came next. But, then they put out Cars 2. I had no interest in it and it looks like I wasn't alone. Cars 2 was the first Pixar movie not to be nominated for the Best Animated Picture Oscar since the category was created. So, when I saw the preview for Brave, I was beyond excited. It looked like a formal apology in the form of a kickass movie. An original idea featuring an independent princess who could fight for herself. It seemed like a surefire idea.

There's a good, interesting movie in here somewhere. Unfortunately, they chose to completely ignore it in favor of an unnecessary, overused plot device. It barely makes sense in the context of the movie. This could have been a great adventure movie. A great new role model for little girls. Why, Pixar, didn't you make that movie? Sure, it looks pretty. Sure the voice work is pretty spot on. The story is just convoluted. You chose a hacky approach instead of focusing on what you used to do so well: telling a compelling story. While this might just a middling animated film, still better than a lot of what comes out. By Pixar standards, though, it's just another disappointment. I don't know what happened. Attached were previews for Monsters University and Planes(?!) and I can't say I'm optimistic. I hope Pixar can get back on track at some point. Until then, their name alone no longer encourages me to see a movie, and that's kind of sad.

A solid piece of entertainment elevated even higher with the inclusion of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon. Reveals that Levitt, on top of everything else, is also a pretty great cyclist. Well, aside from this:

-Taken from IMDb-

"While filming, Joseph Gordon-Levitt rode his bike into a cab and smashed into the rear windshield, shattering it. He managed to block his face with his arms and needed 31 stitches on the right. Despite the large amount of blood streaming down his arm, he thought it was "f**king cool." He took responsibility saying, "No, but it was my fault, I was going too fast.""

They show a brief clip of the aftermath during the credits.

Really, this is just a pretty great popcorn flick.

A documentary about the business behind people trying to "cure" "sexual dysfunction" in women. It's definitely an interesting topic and the film does manage to shed some light on the subject. However, it's just not a great documentary, and the blame falls almost exclusively on the director. She's not a great filmmaker. Her first big mistake is putting herself in the film without providing any real or insightful commentary. It would have worked better if they just allowed the information and the interviews to exist in their own right, or maybe would have benefited from a more professional narrator. The film itself is only engaging because of its subject but loses focus too often and doesn't do enough to hold your attention through the (short) 74 minute run time. If you're interested in the subject, maybe you can use this film as a jumping off point, but I just don't think it shares any information you couldn't find quickly researching it on your own.

The biggest mistake a movie called "Ambraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" could make is to take itself too seriously. Where's the fun? Where's the humor? At its core, it's bad to mediocre fan-fic elevated only a bit by some decent performances. The cast includes three people I really like: Alan Tudyk, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Jimmi Simpson. They do what they can, but this movie just doesn't deliver. Benjamin Walker play Lincoln well enough, but he isn't the badass Lincoln this kind of movie needs. Sure, during the film's climax, you do finally get to have a glimpse of the bearded, axe-toting, vampire-killing Lincoln you've been waiting for, but it's too little, too late. As far as the action goes....fucking bullet time. If you took a drink every time they used bullet time, you'd be dead by the second reel. A little bullet time can be used effectively, but if it's all you got, it does nothing but figuratively, and literally slow down your film. Really, this movie had me wishing for something that I almost never wish for out of a movie. More anachronism! If you're going to take liberties with history, go all the way. Have Nicolas Cage as Lincoln ride out on a velociraptor firing a machine gun while AC/DC's "Back in Black" plays in the background. Why not?

It helps to keep expectations low. You're more likely to come out pleasantly surprised. The Men in Black series has been decent movies with moments or performances I love and this is no exception. I was missing Rip Torn as Zed and kinda of disappointed there wasn't more Tommy Lee Jones and Emma Thompson, but Josh Brolin is a pretty great surrogate for Jones. I was kind of surprised to see Jemaine Clement for Flight of the Conchords as as the unrecognizable villain, but, then I again, maybe I shouldn't be surprised that people are unrecognizable in the Men in Black series. Sure, he's not Vincent D'Onofrio, but he does just fine. My biggest surprise was "A Serious Man"'s Michael Stuhlbarg as an alien who can see all time lines at once. He plays the role with such joy and almost as a borderline autistic, and it just works. I just really like that guy.

Another thing I wanted to comment on was how the movie still works surprisingly well against the sunny, colorful background of the 1960s as opposed to the dark, nighttime settings of the first two. I never thought it looked too ridiculous. Also, without giving away any spoilers, the third act twist actually worked for me. Sure, it's kind of thrown in there and doesn't make too much sense in the context of the Men in Black cannon, but who cares? As a thematic plot line, I bought it.

Overall, a worthy addition to the franchise.

A behind the scene look at what went into making Psycho. I saw this under the best possible circumstances, directly after viewing Psycho, so everything was fresh in my mind. I really, really enjoyed this movie. Anthony Hopkins delivers possibly my favorite lead male performance of the year. As Hitchcock, he gets completely lost in the role and is, in my opinion one of the frontrunners for the Oscar this year. He just brings so much heart and humor to Hitchcock and his chemistry with Helen Mirren, also delivering a great performance, is so real and so amazing. As a biopic, this film knows when to hit hard and when to deliver fantastic tongue in cheek humor. The references to Alfred Hitchcock Presents are always welcome and never feel out of place. I also really love the device of having Hitchcock have these made up conversations with Ed Gein, the real life inspiration for Norman Bates. All in all, if you like Hitchcock at all, or if you just want to see some great performances, I definitely recommend this movie.

I mean, I don't really need to discuss this too much. I finally saw it and I agree with most of the acclaim. Hitchcock deserves the title of Master of Suspense. The performances are great all around, especially from Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins. Anthony Perkins is just downright perfect casting. It could probably stand to lose 10 or 15 minutes, but other than that, I'm glad I saw it. It now stands as my second favorite Hitchcock movie, behind North by Northwest.

A movie that ends up being pretty good despite itself. I like the story. I like the acting, the character, the chemistry. I really believed the performances from the child actors. However, though I normally love Wes Anderson's movies, his style was a little much for me here. I just wanted him to step back for a moment and let the movie exist for itself. He made it hard to love this movie the way I wanted to, but there's enough there to like.

I can say, for the brief time Jason Schwartzman is in the movie, he kicks things into full gear and shows just how comfortably he lives in Wes Anderson's worlds. I mean, the guy's just great.

A fantastic love letter to the arcade. I love the story, the characters, the voice talent. I love seeing the characters of my childhood just hanging out together. I love how much detail seems to go into some of the smallest jokes. Really fun, although I'm not sure I got as emotionally invested in it as I have at movies like How to Train Your Dragon or most of Pixar's filmography. Also, there's a really jarring, unnecessary montage featuring Rihanna's "Drive". I don't really object to the montage itself, but hamfistedly shoving in a contemporary song like that just screamed studio interference. I think I actually would have preferred the Muppets' route (another nostalgia movie) and thrown in "We Built This City On Rock and Roll". The scene wasn't enough to turn me against the movie, but it did take me out of it briefly. However, there's so many small things that make up for it.

Things like:
There is a character named Minty Zaki!
The arcade owner is completely modeled after Twin Galaxies owner, Walter Day! (If you haven't seen The King of Kong, watch it now!)
Alan Tudyk proving once again that he's way more often than Hollywood gives him credit for!

If you're a fan of video games, especially from the 80s and 90s, or even if you're just a fan of well made animated movies, this is definitely worth watching. I do wonder how kids feel about it. I feel like they'd enjoy it, even if they didn't pick up on a lot of the subtle jokes. My friend and I were the only ones in the theater, so I don't know how other audience react, but I keep hearing positive things coming from other people, so if you don't want to take my word for it, take theirs.

Oh, and one more thing, I was severely wanting a cameo from Donkey Kong. Ralph is obviously heavily inspired by him, and I just wanted someone to come by and say, "Hey, Ralph! You can go from bad to good! I've done it!"

Disney's latest animated short. It plays in front of Wreck-It Ralph. It may just be one of my favorites! I love everything about this. The animation style seems classic, yet modern. The story is so sweet, so engaging, even without a single word spoken. So effective. Disney's shorts tend to be a try out for long time animators who wish to try directing, and I really, really hope that director John Kahrs gets to do a full length film after this. I was really, really impressed, and I'd love to see what he does on a larger scale.

Wow. Not really a scary movie, but legitimately creepy with almost no hint of humor. While the acting can be a bit stiff, I actually love the story. The writing and direction start off a little slow, but when it gets going, it really gets good. I love the special effects, makeup and character design. Combined, they really push this movie into being something better than I would expect. Vincent Price stars as a Shakespearean actor, thought to be dead, who returns to kill off the reviewers who wronged him in deaths inspired by the bard's plays. Yet, somehow, despite all that, this movie just doesn't work. It remains quite dull throughout most of it with characters making just terrible, unexplainable decisions. Not campy enough to be an accidental classic. Really, despite Vincent doing what he can with the material, it's just disappointing. I'd love to see this movie remade. It could definitely be better. I love the idea. I don't love the movie.

A flawed but funny film made by a girl who obviously just wants her vampires to be blood-thirsty killers again. Slightly amaturish, but it does directly and indirectly spoof the teen vampire romance fad more successfully than anything else I've seen. I'm not going to defend the movie by saying the writer/director Emily Hagins is only 19 years old and making competent feature films, so its flaws should get a pass. However, I hope she continues to make as many films as she can, because as she learns and matures, her films are only going to get better and I'd gladly see whatever else she puts out.

I went into this movie really expecting to love it, but it less me down immensely. It doesn't hold up at all. The writing is clunky. The acting is stilted. The pacing is excruciatingly slow. The characters are unbelievable and unlikable. There is no tension, no scares. Just about every joke falls flat. It really is just a mess of a movie.

I mean, yes, the transformation scene holds up. It's the only good this this movie has going for it. If I was rating just that ~3 minute sequence, I'd praise this movie, but there's still another 90+ minutes to sit through.

This is one of those movie that could really benefit from a good remake. If you got someone who is really great at blending horror and comedy and also doesn't shy away from practical effects. A short list of directors I think could make this movie fantastic include Sam Raimi, Guillermo del Toro, & Edgar Wright among others.

As it stands know, I'm extremely disappointed.

Not as consistently funny as I hoped, but when it's funny, it's really funny. This is actually the movie version of a Danish TV show, "Klovn", which is described as the Danish "Curb Your Enthusiasm". Now I really want to see the TV show. It definitely feels a lot like Curb in that it deals with a guy who's not exactly a bad guy but just makes horrible, horrible decisions, but it goes to a few places that you'll almost never see in an American film, to mixed results. It's definitely not a film for everyone. The basic plot is that a guy kidnaps his 13 year old nephew and take him on his and his friend's vacation deemed the "Tour de Pussy" to prove to his girlfriend that he has the potential to take care of a child. If that sounds funny to you, then you should probably check it out. There are at least a few great laughs in this.

It's a little overlong, but then again, most movies are, but it's a good, light movie. You get some laughs, you get some great dialogue, and you get to watch it all with an Italian backdrop. I left the theater smiling and whistling "Volare".

Let me say that, I am really happy about that, because I'm pretty sure that I enjoyed The Amazing Spider-Man more than any "Avengers" lead-up movie. Also, easily more than "The Avengers". This is how you blend action, comedy, romance, and the kind of good-hearted cheesiness that Marvel is known for. A superhero movie with a surprising amount of heart. It's amazing how much you feel for each and every character. And I have to give it credit for redoing a scene that was featured in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man", and still choking me up.
Speaking of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, how does it hold up? Well, I like Sam Raimi. His first Spider-Man was a comic book movie game changer and paved the way for a lot of genre. The second movie? Even better than the first. I loved Spider-Man 2 when it first came out. The third? Well...we don't have to talk about the third. So, was it worth it to reboot the series so quickly? Yes, yes, YES! This is exactly how you should reboot a franchise. It takes what made those movies good, and actually does it better. This very well may be the best Spider-Man movie, period.
Andrew Garfield is fantastic as Peter Parker. He balances being a stammering dork with moments of cockiness and wit. Also, give me Emma Stone's Gwen Stacey over Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane Watson any day. Talk about a great love interest. She manages to stand on her own as a strong, intelligent character and never falls to a whining damsel in distress. Also great in familiar roles are Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May. The really provide a great emotional core to Peter Parker's personal life. They show enormous depth. Rhys Ifans plays The Lizard and is a very fair villain. I'm not quite if I like him more than Doc Ock, but if he's not first, he's second. Yes, I like him more than Green Goblin, as great as Willem Defoe was. Even Denis Leary holds his own as Gwen's father and the chief of police. It's nice that people who never watched Rescue Me can see what a great actor that guy has become.
Really, what surprised me most about this movie was just the amount of heart it had. I really felt for the characters, more than I expected to. It might be the first time since The Dark Night that I was truly emotionally involved with the characters.
Speaking of The Dark Knight, it's a shame that this might only be my favorite superhero movie of 2012 for a couple more weeks, but in a year that's giving us, both The Avengers and The Dark Knight RIses, The Amazing Spider-Man deserves credit for being able to hold it's own. Easily in my top 3 for the year so far, I'm just not sure where. Yes, I have a couple of problems with it. I don't think I'll ever love CG, and sometimes it does take it's cheesiness a little too far, but overall, this is not only a fantastic superhero movie, but one of the best movies of the year so far. Easily worth the full price ticket.

It's a shame. This could have been a really good movie. Unfortunately, they chose to make it a found footage movie, which turns this into an uninteresting mess. There really was no reason for it. I especially don't need constant justification for the cameras always being on. One of the first lines in the movie is, "I bought a camera and I'm filming everything from here on out." Right then I knew I was in trouble. You know a really easy way to justify cameras filming the events of your movie? Just make a movie! There's no need for the gimmick.

There are some really interesting aspects to this movie. There's also some really good shots and decent effects. I know this just came out this year, but I want somebody to remake it as a proper film, and do it right. So much potential, but ultimately, a disappointment.

Tom Hardy is absolutely amazing in this film. If he wasn't so fantastic, there might not be a reason to recommend this movie at all. As a film, it really lacks story and narrative structure. However, Hardy brings it to a whole other level. If you want to see a great performance, check it out, but be prepared to leave with a feeling that this is incomplete.
