An RPG must have experience through battle (or use in some cases). That's the only rule, but there are sub-rules that make it so not every game that has experience through battle is an RPG. Equipment and money, town exploration, and seamlessness (no stages/levels) are some common ones. Confused? Me too. Welcome to The Ultimate JRPG Compendium on Listal, and anywhere for that matter. I will have listed, divided by system (and ultimately by genre, trope, nuance, etc) all console and handheld RPGs available in English. It's taken a long time to get this list transferred here to Listal, but I think this will be a nice home, unless I ever decide to do a domain or wikia. Who knows wikia well? Contact me! The main list has RPGs including turn-based, action, strategy, roguelikes, proxy battle, monster breeding/raising, dungeon crawlers, Zelda/derivatives and a plethora of relatable games that just don't quite make the cut.
These lists are really meant as checklists for collectors like me. I hope you will eventually find a wealth of info here outside of just the list. Please comment with suggestions or e-mail me. Not everything is set in stone, but I do have a firm vision of what I think belongs where. We all have different views on what an RPG is, so I'm up for debate. I am trying to develop a system to categorize them better. I have flipped my opinion on Zelda, Monster Hunter, Castlevania, etc so many times... :)
