Stipulations for addition:
1) Items to collect that help advance the storyline, or provide additional levels. Games that solely have items that you collect (100 of) to gain extra lives are not counted. (Jiggies, Jinjos, Notes in Banjo-Kazooie)
2) The ability to go back to previous levels and collect missing items. This usually means there's a hub world(s) or overworld(s) of some kind. A menu is also acceptable. (Gruntilda's Lair in Banjo-Kazooie)
3) Must be 3D with the ability to move in all directions in 3rd person. Plane switching (LittleBigPlanet, Super Paper Mario) do not count.
4) No licensed games at all.
Check out Pumpkinate's Eras of 3D Platform Games list for an interesting breakdown and categorization of the genre into Ages with a nice write-up for each era and examples.
