Kissing Away the Scars
The couple in the number one spot:
Jamal and Latika
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because everything terrible that has happened in Jamal's life flash in his mind and before our eyes as he's running to get to her. It seems that they have all happened to bring him finally to this place--waiting for her in the train station.
2. Because his kiss is not only an assurance of the boy-gets-girl happy ending, but it also turns back the clock and washes away the scars that she has suffered to get there as well.
3. Because he has loved her and protected her from the moment that he saw her as a little girl in the rain.
4. Because it is written. Beautiful. Who doesn't believe in destiny after this story?

The shrug that shook his world
The clip is a montage, but it covers that boy-gets-girl moment well.
The couple in question:
Noah and Allie
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because there are a barrage of other kisses in this film, and better ones at that, before the definitive moment of forever, but in the end, it's a simple hug that takes the prize.
2. Because of a simple shrug--one that says "What else did you expect from me?" and one that (as it says in the title) shook Noah's entire world.
3. Because of his reaction. A man wrapped in a blanket with sleep still in his eyes, staring down with perfect loving, knowing tolerance at the woman he knows by heart and still wants forever.
4. Because we know he has her right up until the very end. We know he staye with her through thick and thin...through Alzeimer's, and then ends up in her arms in the end as well. The ultimate happy ending.

Why are you crying?
The couple in question:
Celia and Robbie
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because we have ALL been there...in the position that we only just then realize how much we love the person that is standing right there in front of us. Only in the real world, tearful confessions don't get us James McAvoy.
2. Because it occurs after what is possibly the most embarrassing erroneous delivery ever. If the boy has the courage to show his face after what he wrote in that note, we have to love him!
3. Because that kiss is the best answer ever to the question "Why are you crying?"
4. Because of Celia's little reassuring grin after the aforementioned best answer ever.
5. Becauseeven though they lose each other in the war and cannot find each other in the end, we at least get a glimpse of the peace that they could have both found only in each other.

Every step I have taken...
The couple in question:
Sayuri and the Chairman
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because she has spent her entire life trying to find her imagined happy ending with a man that she knows could never love her back only to find out in the last minutes that he has been doing the exact same thing. Why can't real life be so poetic?
2. Because he was the first person to show her kindness in a life full of injustice.
3. Because he appears after he has seen the very worst of her, just when every last piece of hope that she has has been shattered.
4. Because the reason it has taken so long to finally arrive at the boy-gets-girl moment is purely honor. He was too loyal to his friend to shatter his hopes.

Where the Heart Is (2000)
There isn't anything better than you
The couple in question:
Novalee and Forney
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because she is a high school drop out with a child from some other man who works in the Walmart, and he is a grad-student in an Ivy League college on the fast track to wealth and high society, and still...there's nothing better than her!
2. Because he has spent the entire film in the background, doing everything for her and loving her for every imperfection that she shows.
3. Because it takes her SO long to realize it...and still, he's waiting.
4. Because the kiss is so beautiful that it can make me forget that they actually get married in a WALMART!

Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
Just as you are
All right. The kiss is probably the most satisfying scene, but I was not able to find it, and so you are left with what every woman in the world wants to hear, and what I am certain every woman in the world made little sighing noises at the first time they watched this film...exactly how Mr. Mark Darcy likes Bridget...
The couple in question:
Bridget and Mark
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because every woman in the world wants to here someone admit that they love them...just the way they are.
2. Because I have honestly dreamed of punching Hugh Grant in the face from the moment I saw him. I'm literally jealous of Mark Darcy.
3. Because he fell for a loud mouthed, drinking, smoking, bumbling chubby woman, he admitted his own faults, and he loves her for hers. Dream come true.
4. Because, finally, she fell for the right one!

Amélie (2001)
The perfect front door greeting
The couple in question:
Amélie and Nino
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because after an entire film of struggling through and trying to make life better for other people, Amélie is facing her own disappointment alone. In a moment of courage after listening to some very wise words, she decides to persue her own happiness just this once...she fully deserves what she finds.
2. Because she had no friends growing up. Her only friend, a fish, constantly tried to kill himself, and she’s passed her life alone cultivating tiny pleasures that would make her life a little less lonely…she needs to know the enormous pleasure that love can bring.
3. She spends the whole movie listening to the mundane tales and empty complaints of everyone else. It is absolutely wonderful to discover that her own life won’t ever be like that.
4. Because they are both so wierd that they are absolutely perfect for each other!

Aragorn and Arwen
The reason behind the happy ending
1. Because it is the epitome of an epic love story created by one of the best fantasy authors in history and millenium in the making.
2. Because she is nearly immortal, from the most beautiful and magic race in her world, and royalty in that race, and yet she chooses to give it all up for the love of a mortal man.
3. He has fought his way through every dark, evil creature in his world right to the gates of Mordor. He's entered the lands of the dead and faced off against even his own temptation, and all of it to save a world where he would be worthy of her.
4. It's a union between the race of men and the race of elves...I'm nothing if not practical.

Sliding across languages
The couple in question:
Jamie and Aurelia
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because he traveled across the English Channel, learned another language, and faced some pretty terrible in-laws and the worst kind of public humiliation to ask for her hand in marriage. He SOO deserves that kiss!
2. Because it's the quiet kind of love--the kind you don't know anything about until it's gone and then you want it so much that you're willing to do anything for it...AND HE DID!
3. Because he gets major gentleman points for not elbowing the younger sister in the jaw...and more for not wretching when she kisses him later!
4. Because it's easy to imagine a Happily Ever After in Portugal.

The second time around
The couple in question:
Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because he loved her from afar and in secret more or less since the moment he saw her, stealing masked glances and cherishing a simple touch. It took two tries and a whole lot of convincing, but it all just makes the final acceptance that much more breathtaking.
2. Because he payed for a scandalous wedding for her youngest sister and practically arranged the wedding for her older sister...all without knowing that her affections had changed and all only because he loved her.
3. Because of the way she makes her father cry later when asking for permission to marry him.
4. Because I love...I love...I love...the way he worded his second proposal!

Satine and Christian
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because he knows about her past, and even her present. He knows the things that bind her and the realities of the world that they both live in, but he chooses to disregard it all and create one happy and perfect moment for them both to live in where no one else can touch them.
2. Because who can hate a true love kiss amidst the glitter and polish and glamour of a Bollywood musical?
3. Because of the look on his face during the song Roxanne, when he has to imagine what she is being forced to do to create that one perfect moment for them both.
4. Because everything is so much more perfect when set to a soundtrack.

The one that almost got away
The couple in question:
Matthew and Lisa
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because they were supposed to be together from the beginning. You could see throughout the entire movie how they weren't really living or whole without eachother. The ending was really only righting wrongs.
2. Because of the way he glares at Rose Byrne when he realizes what she's done. Anyone who can burn away facial features with hateful glares can do some pretty impressive things with love!
3. Because it's almost the opposite of the one above. Fate had tried to tear them apart, but in the end, they won out.
4. Because she knew he was there. She felt him in the end, though she hadn't been anywhere near him for years.

Love across the rooftops
The couple in question:
Jude and Lucy
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because they've gone through the entire sixties together--suffered the war, suffered the race riots, surfed through on an acid high, and all in a two hour period. It split them apart and took so many of their friends. A rooftop reunion is a perfect end to a pretty memorable decade.
2. Because if Janis Joplin and Jimmy hendrix are trying to keep you together, you say yes sir and ma'am and you get back together.
3. Because, once again, love is so much more potent to music.
4. Because it made me forget for a moment that Janis and Jimmy die, and that Jude will eventually be caught and deported thanks to the wonderful U.S. immigration laws...and just see the love. All you need is love!

3. Because they both believed enough in destiny that they were willing to walk away from the lives that they had built. That only happens in the movies.

My wife has a thousand smiles
Sorry guys...the only one I could find was in Spanish!
The couple in question:
Micheal and Alice
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because of this quote (that I can unfortunately only find in Spanish): "My wife is an alcoholic. Best person I ever met. She has 600 different smiles. They can light up your life. They can make you laugh out loud, just like that. They can even make you cry, just like that. That's just with her smiles. You'd have to see her with her kids. You'd have to see how they look at her, when she's not looking. To think of all the things she lives through, and I couldn't help her."
2. Because he loves her from the beginning and tries to stay with her through everything. Her alcoholism drives them apart, but in the end, the love is there through it all.
3. Because it's not only about a couple anymore. This is the reconciliation of an entire family, which makes the ending that much more happy.
4. Because of those beautifully Cuban puppy-dog eyes.

The couple in question:
Wesley and Princess Buttercup
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because the final kiss blows away the five greatest kisses ever known to man. We can't argue with that!
2. Because we were all waiting and hoping and knowing that this one was going to have a happy ending, but there is something wonderful about a kiss that can be so predicted and yet still make us sigh when it happens.
3. Because deep down, we are all still yearning for fairy-tales, and we love it when those kind of movies pass into adulthood.
4. Because he faced mythical creatures, spiteful villains, and even came back from the dead to rectify everything and give us a happy ending.

The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because there is something poetic about a man who has never been good with words finding a Southern Belle who falls in love with him just before he goes off to war. And something even more poetic about his journey through Hell to get back to her. I suppose Homer discovered this a little bit before I did.
2. Because I absolutely LOVE a first kiss that brings them both to their knees.
3. Because through all of the destruction of war, and all of the death that he sees. Though everything around him is ugly and hateful and he can't see a reason for the world to keep on turning, he looks to her to keep his world on it's axis.
4. Because the terrors of war reach home too, and after all that she has to learn to live on her own without him, she keeps him in her heart and never once allows it to enter her mind that he won't come back to her.

A prince on a Jewish horse
go to 8:20 for the guy-gets-girl-moment
The couple in question:
Guido and Dora
The reason behind the (not exactly) happy ending:
1. Because we instinctively root for the underdog, and a Jewish waiter on a vandalized pull-horse in the middle of the fascist Italy of WWII stealing the rich, pure-blood bride of one of his serving parties is just about as underdog as you can get.
2. Because of the lengths that she goes to to be near her husband...and the lengths that he goes to to save their son from the horrors that he's smack-dab in the middle of.
3. Because of all of the tiny details that happen to get them together...makes you want to believe in fate again!
4. Because if anyone can create a boy-gets-girl story so amazingly beautiful that I can forget that the leading man is a clumsy, bumbling, not-so-great-looking old Italian nerd, then that man deserves a place on this list.

2. Because they suffer for so long being so much in love and so close to each other...of depending on each other by day and by night as animals and nothing more, and so when the curse is finally broken, and Isabeau sees the light of day with human eyes for the first time, the meeting between the two is magic.
3. Because of her reproach of the priest in the end. She takes the ties that used to tie her to his arm as a hawk and throws them at his feet. That hatred in those eyes is...convincing.
4. Because he thought that she was dead and was seconds away from killing the priest before he could break the curse...but her voice brought him back.
skip to 5:21 for the guy-get-girl moment.
An evil priest who happened to be in love with the woman placed a form of curse on the couple. By day,the woman is a hawk and by night, she converts into herself, but by day, the man is human, and by night he is a wolf.
The couple in question:
Etienne and Isabeau

I'm here to rescue you...
The couple in question:
Danielle and Prince Henry
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because he came on his galliant steed like the Prince Charming that he is to rescue her, only to find out that she rescued herself!
2. Because you've got to love a story that has Leonardo DaVinci as a matchmaker!
3. Because everyone likes that idea that the lowly common girl will be the one that the prince falls for. Scores of English women counted on that for years before the oldest one of those hideous princes finally chose someone.
4. Because the ending was happy enough that it made me forget that Drew Barrymore was horribly faking a British accent for a film that was supposed to be set in France.

Family intervention
The couple in question:
Jack and Lucy
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because, once again, he admires her from afar and in secret, too good of a brother to try to take his brother's "fiance" while he's lying in a coma.
2. Because, all things considered, he's the one who really did deserve her a thousand times over.
3. Because the entire relationship started out as a complete lie and he still wanted her back.
4. Because you've got to love a guy who invites his whole family to propose to a girl.

And it all ends with fate
The couple in question:
Sam and Annie
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because Sam was just so tragically loyal to his wife. He struggled so much and tried every day not to show it...to be a good father to Jonah and to carry on. He deserves something straight out of an old love story.
2. Because she heard his voice from thousands of miles away and is moved to tears. She writes to him, flies thousands of miles only to make eye contact with him once, and spends the entire film talking about him to her friends, but it takes Sam's son to bring them together in the end.
3. Because it's a kid approved couple.
4. Because...once again...it's fate!

Southern Fried Happy Ending
The couple in question:
Melanie and Jake
The reason behind the happy ending:
1. Because they've been in love since high school. They've lived some wonderful times, and some not-so-wonderful times, but even a disappearance to New York can't kill the electricity (hee hee hee!) that they have.
2. Because it ends in a war of words worthy of the small town Southern white trash that she is trying so hard not to be, and it's followed by a passionate kiss in the rain...in a wedding dress that had to cost a fortune...in between a dozen poles that are made to attract lightning...without a care in the world.
3. Because they're married anyway, and we all want to believe that a marriage between two people who really love each other can be saved...no matter how far gone it is.
4. Think of the dog. Would you split up his family?

Caution: here there be spoilers!
This will be eternally in progress...any suggestions? I'll be glad to take them. It's just so hard to find that exact perfect moment in the abyss of youtube!
Reality is full of disappointments and missed opportunities. It seems as though fate takes every chance it can get to destroy our over-romanticized notions of love. So here is a list of the absolutely most satisfying (at least that I've seen)boy-gets-girl moments in the movies. They may only be fleeting, and it may take a lifetime (or another two hours) to end up happy, but these are the moments where the heartstrings are properly pulled. Please take a moment to say "To hell with reality" and find some happy endings!
