In Harm's Way (1965)
Most place names are changed, as are some ships, and some vehicles are not accurate to the date (and some human styles). In all, the characters are sound, and the Navy seems to be represented well, professionally and socially (good and bad).
Jim Cripps's rating:
Valkyrie (2008)
Tom Cruise wanted this movie to be as accurate as possible, and only a few liberties were take, Probably had to deal with a limited budget for his, (the old, resurrected), United Artists company.
Jim Cripps's rating:
The action onboard the carrier is terrific, though with some problems with planes appearing too early on the date of actual events, and with some of the use of the planes. For a movie filmed toward the end of the war, it's pretty good, and still holds up. Yet, it is heavy on spirit and propaganda. The gist of the story is not factual, but is somewhat believable. Don Ameche is practically unrecognizable in his serious role, nonetheless he is the stand-out character. Grittier than most era movies, it is a must see!
Jim Cripps's rating:
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944)
As a biographical movie, it's awful. As an enjoyable drama, full of heart-string tugs, then it's good. There are some basic facts present, but the rest is fancy.
Jim Cripps's rating:
Actually a big disappointment compared to the book, but, if you don't want to read the book, then you'll learn a lot about the beginning of NASA (and the 'space race') from this movie. Made for TV, so it's got to be good! /sarcasm/
Jim Cripps's rating:
List of Good Historical movies—that they are factual or somewhat based on actual events. They may not all be perfect, but they are good entertainment.
