Girlie Movies I Actually Like

Girlieness Rating: 6/10

I don't really consider Titanic to be much of a girlie movie, to be honest, but it is very much a romance and the public see it as a chick flick, so I best profess my love for this movie on this list.

Titanic has one of the most affecting screen romances ever, in my humble opinion. I always find myself deeply affected by the end because I'm so invested in it. Add to this the impact of knowing that 1500 people went into the ocean and died on that fateful night...and I'm almost always a wreck (pun intended) after viewing. Especially that freaking final tracking shot, holy moly.

It helps that Titanic is also an exciting action film. The sinking scenes are hugely intense, and it gives men something to enjoy.

Admittedly, there is some male appeal here due to the presence of Mila Kunis and the fact this is a movie about people having lots of sex... But it's still a movie aimed at the female demographic more than anyone else. It's a story about feelings and romance and stuff, without any colourful action scenes or 'splosions.

But it's a real credit to everyone involved that the movie is as fun as it is. I liked the funny dialogue, the energetic acting and the brisk pacing. It's fluffy fun, and it's something to watch when I have girls over.

Meet Joe Black is a movie mostly intended for girls, that fact cannot be denied. It's a romance, it stars pretty-boy Brad Pitt at the height of his femininity (he has shirtless scenes), and there's nothing here that can be considered manly. There are no explosions, guns, action scenes, or even any real profanity.

But I've said it many times before and I'll say it again: I love this freaking movie.

I avoided this movie like the plague for years. It seemed like something that really wouldn't interest me, as it stars attractive young boys and gals, and it's got romantic elements.

So colour me very surprised when I enjoyed it as much as I did. The makers behind the movie clearly knew they needed to appeal to men as well, so there's great humour for the male demographic. It's just a good fun movie no matter your gender.

My mother loves this movie. So does my auntie. And my female cousins... You can see the pattern emerging here -- the people who love this film the most are the girls in my family. I had no interest in Love Actually for years, but I watched it when I had nothing better to do.

Glad I did. It's funny and heartfelt. I purchased my own copy on Blu-ray, because it's an essential part of any collection.

I only watched this movie because I was in the midst of a mad film-watching spree, and was watching every film from every genre just for the sake of being able to say that I've seen it. The Devil Wears Prada was a popular film at the time, so I needed to check it out.

It's a really great movie. Meryl Streep is just wonderful. It's a pretty cliched story, to be sure, but told really well, with great actors and plenty of heart. I own this movie on Blu-ray and I'm not even ashamed of it.

I actually remember internally poking fun at this movie when I first saw the poster. It looked like just another stupid rom-com with two recognisable rom-com actors, without anything that I usually enjoy in movies.

But holy crap, it was actually good. Methinks it soars the most because of the musical aspect. The way it parodies pop songs new & old is spot-on, and the sharp script has laughs that'll appeal to both genders. What a wonderful surprise.

I worked at a cinema when this movie was released, and I felt disgusted whenever I checked sessions of it. Looked like pure tripe for the Glee crowd. But it got solid reviews, much to my bewilderment, so I had to investigate.

Like all movies on this list, my mind was blown when I finally watched it. I laughed quite a bit, found myself invested in the story, and could relate to the characters. It's fluffy fun.

Ah yes, perhaps the epitome of girlieness. Like most movies of this ilk, I was not interested in seeing this, but I knew it was very popular with girls. It was quoted everywhere at school and it became so seeped into popular culture that I knew half the script before I even watched it.

And then I did watch it, and I laughed. A lot.

I did not watch this movie voluntarily. I watched it because it was part of my school curriculum, and I had to study it. Upon learning that I had to study it, I gave it a rent...and when I watched it, I began looking forward to my studies all the more.

I love Clueless. It's just so funny.

You can smell girlie on the video cover of Priscilla. It's a movie about gay male cross-dressers, after all.

And yet, it's another movie I absolutely adore. It's brilliantly funny and entertaining from start to end, plus the cast are totally spot-on. It's another movie that I'll happy watch with a girlfriend, as girls love this movie and so do I. It's a brilliant compromise when I don't want to watch The Notebook and they're not keen on RoboCop.

This is one of the only movies on this list that I saw of my own accord, hoping to like it. Oh I knew it was a romance, but it was an epic too, and the hype was so big in my country that I was destined to go see it at the cinema.

Sue me. I liked it in 2008, and I still like it to this day. Girlie movie with romance, to be sure, but it's done well.
