J. Edgar (2017)

DVD- 2hrs. 17min.
First Viewing
DiCaprio is solid, but the film around him is just a mess. That infamous old-age makeup is pretty bad, especially on Armie Hammer (he looks like a robot with wax skin), and the awful voice-over is just a killer.

My Week with Marilyn (2011)

DVD- 1hr. 39min.
First Viewing
The cast keeps it watchable, but there's nothing new about, and we don't learn anymore about Marilyn Monroe than we already did.

The Guard (2011)

DVD- 1hr. 35min.
First Viewing
A funny, wonderfully entertaining film. The supporting cast is strong, but this is Gleeson's film, and he owns it. His performance sets the tone for the movie. I was surprised by how much I liked this movie. I was also surprised that I actually liked the villains; it's a rare occurrence when an action-comedy film doesn't use stock villains, and here they're very enjoyable.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

DVD- 2hrs. 8min.
First Viewing
I really wanted to love this movie, but I just couldn't. It looks good, and the cast is strong, but it's just so dry. There aren't many interesting characters, and the few that are really don't get too much development. Interesting, but ultimately boring.

Killer Elite (2011)

DVD- 1hr. 56min.
First Viewing
Despite a strong cast, it never really registers as anything more than an adequately made action movie.

Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)

DVD- 1hr. 56min.
First Viewing
Incredibly slow at times, but adequately moody and alluring. Featuring a strong cast, including a breakout turn from Elizabeth Olsen, who emerges herself in the role of a fractured wallflower. Keeps you guessing until the end.
