Elefantin matka - José Saramago

There's something seriously wrong with the way this book was printed. Made the thing needlessly difficult to read.

The Fall - Albert Camus

Now this was a great read. Best of Camus as far as I'm concerned.

Another average Witcher collection. This time it's all dull and mediocre.

Massively overrated. One awesome story, others more or less average.

Nausea - Jean-Paul Sartre
16.7.

Sartre is clearly more interesting as a writer than what he is as a philosopher.
Darth Brutus's rating:

Dog Years - Gunter Grass
13.7.

One of the toughest books I have ever read. It's more about spiraling flow of information and random train of thought than your typical narrative, even though the plot and the characters are actually there somewhere. Very satisfying, but needs insane patience and at least several months to read through. First time I couldn't make it to the end, so this was my second try.

This MUST to be read in original format, though, since the text includes so much wordplay, sly satire and cultural references that don't make any sense in any other language than German.

Elric Of Melnibone - Michael Moorcock
13.7.

Surprisingly lame considering how legendary stuff this is supposed to be.

The Quiet Girl: A Novel - Peter Høeg
12.7.

Boring novel, the story is all over the place. I've enjoyed some of the author's other works, but this is a pure failure.
Darth Brutus's rating:

This is something of a prequel to the real stuff, if I remember correctly. It's been a long time since I last time read this first installment.

Surprisingly solid counter-argumentation against Dawkins. Still, it's way too vague and misses way too many obvious points. Too much moralizing.
Darth Brutus's rating:

The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins
11.7.

So... that was it? The holy bible of atheism is quite an underwhelming experience. Few thoughts:

1. Mr. Dawkins aims to destroy the concepts of god and religion, but only talks about one or two and generalizes their special properties to every religion imaginable. The author doesn't even bother to explain why he thinks this is appropriate.

2. Mr. Dawkins LOVES to moralize and judge historical events and people by our standards.

3. Every single bad thing done by religious people are caused by religion and religious beliefs without question, but you can't prove these atrocities of self-proclaimed atheists are actually caused by atheism itself.

4. Didn't bother to specify which school of thought he's actually criticizing, christian is just christian, Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Extreme-UFO-Christian cults and all, it's all the same right? It's all over the place.

5. Sheer arrogance and bad habit of passing valid counter-criticism without actually bothering to answer it at all, just whine and claim his own opinion is the best. Uses David Hume to back his own claims, but doesn't bother to mention that his philosophical thinking leads to more diplomatic solution to the question of the relation between religion and science. Mr. Dawkins doesn't want anything else than black and white.

6. Talking about large scale impact of religion without using any statistics or empirical data to back his claims. This stuff is everywhere nowadays, everything even remotely related to this subject matter has been studied for ages.

7. Dawkins boasts that his book has been popular in some third world countries and naively claims this as a success in spreading his atheistic ideology, when in fact these countries are well known for the persecution of certain religious minorities and his book can be used to promote this way of genocidal backwards thinking since he only attacks these few chosen religions, not all of them. Mein Kampf is also bestseller in these very same countries for the very same reason.

Liberalism: A Counter-History - Domenico Losurdo
1.6.

What a piece of garbage this book is. I thought it was supposed to be some kind of argumentation against liberal political thinking, but it's mostly just moralizing bullshit.

Like some liberal thinker somewhere has said some nasty things, and this writer here takes them out of the historical context and starts moralizing based on the values of our time. That's so cheap and crappy writing.
Darth Brutus's rating:
1.6.

Very typical American liberal leftist jargon, but very shallow and boring if you happen to know anything about the subject matter.

I presume this is something of a women's novel, since it's all about relationships. I found it unbelievably boring snorefest.

Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand
18.5.

Utter garbage. If this wasn't written during cold war era and by famous anti-commie this would never have gotten this popular.

From a literary point of view alone the story is so bland and childish it makes the actual philosophical nonsense feel very intriguing in comparison. Too bad this isn't an essay concerning such fascinating topics, but a 1500+ pages long marathon of pure pain and nearly unreadable load of intellectual feces.

A tale of Jewish people in 19th century Poland. Fantastic little novel, but as far as I understand, the one I read is only part of something even bigger epoch, and it shows.

Local Anaesthetic - Gunter Grass

I don't know if it's just bad translation or whatever, but this novel is an ABSOLUTE MESS. I couldn't get a grasp of it at all, and I'm a huge fan of the author.

Cat and Mouse - Gunter Grass
27.3.

Grassin pikkuinen kirjanen meni matkalukemisina kuin vettä vain. Tarina on erittän suoraviivainen, mutta mestarin surrealistisuutta hipova kuivan ironinen kielenkäyttö jaksaa aina ihastuttaa.

Of Mice And Men - John Steinbeck
27.3.

En odottanut varsinaisesti mitään suurta mestariteosta, enkä varsinaisesti sellaista saanutkaan. En edes muista oliko tämä ensimmäinen vai toinen kerta kun luin, enkä varmaan muista seuraavallakaan kerralla.
Darth Brutus's rating:

Rather superficial but enjoyable look at Dostoyevsky's life and literary works.

Too short to deserve to be called novel. I mean seriously, it's just barely 60 pages long essay about the history and culture of Corsica.

Rasvamaksa - Veikko Huovinen
19.3.

In Finland this collection of short humorous stories is like a Catcher in the Rye, many people call it racist and want it banned. In reality it's rather boring and tame even for our political correct age.

The leading German intellectuals of the 17th century gather in an inn to have some artistic philosophical discussions and stuff.

Knowing Grass, this novel is full of absurd and ironic humor, but unless you actually know about the people and places it depicts, it's nearly unreadable, since the story and the characters aren't that lively or interesting to begin with. Since I'm not a professor of German culture history, I had hard time getting through this thing.
Darth Brutus's rating:

Once again a great novel by Murakami. This time a person attempts to make amends with his former friends and a woman, who accused him falsely of raping her. The friends had some color in their name, while the main protagonist was "colorless" or just your average Joe.
Darth Brutus's rating:
1.2.

A collection of short stories about men, who have one way or another lost their touch with women. The first few stories were brilliant, but at the end I began to lose interest really fast. It's not that long book anyway, so no problems reading it through.

"The Dark Age: Ten Myths About The Middle Ages"

After some busy weeks finally had some time to read books again. This one is about all sorts of myths regarding the Middle Ages. Well written and very informative, one of the best books I have read on the subject matter.

This thing reminded me of one thing that our professor once told us. Some student of his had asked about some strange details in some basic theories and the professor couldn't give him any answers. Then he decided to check where these details actually came from, and turned out they were from some now forgotten author from the 1800's that later scholars have just taken for granted and referenced each other without ever checking the original source.

A critical essay of the negative effects of the rapid digitalization of our culture. A great book.

Mikael Karvajalka - Mika Waltari
5.2.

Another epic historical masterpiece by Mika Waltari. This time it's about two Finnish dudes in the 16th century Europe.

Karvajalka means "hairy foot".

I know the author from my former working place, so naturally I had to read his new book. It is one of the best and most informative Finnish academic releases I have read in ages. This thing opened whole new dimensions and interesting cultural and ideological contexts for me, like a well written stuff should.

This took a while to read, but I finally got every single Murakami done. Killing Commendatore is the longest novel he has written so far, and in my opinion way too long. The story itself is quite flat and boring, until the last 100-150 it doesn't really go anywhere.

Sputnik Sweetheart - Haruki Murakami
2.2.

Out of all the works of Murakami I have read so far, this might be my least favourite. Since this was my second to last Murakami, I'm already so familiar with his style that this romantic philosophical detective story felt just average good to meh.

Recommended for people who have not yeat read any of Murakamis's other novels.
Darth Brutus's rating:

Rather mediocre drama about a man who has falls in love with a woman other than his wife. Nothing really special or interesting here.

Somewhat overrated historical epoch. Even though I have seen dozens of film versions, the bleak ending still came as a surprise.

Read this alongside the Hunchback. One of Murakami's best and most surreal novels. This is the kind of stuff I just love.

Maa on syntinen laulu - Timo K. Mukka

Another Finnish classic, but this time very... cynical and realist to the bone. Not my cup of tea, especially the accent these northern people talked was pretty much gibberish to a westerner like me.
