Mike Silverman, or better known as That 1 Guy is a one man band who tours around with his homemade instruments.

Well known for wearing an all black ensemble (doesn't matter how hot it is) and has the overall appearance of an Amish man. That is because he is... or was. He was born into an Amish family, and at the age of 18, the rules are you can either break from everything you grew up knowing to become a part of the modern world or stay with what you know best in the Amish community. Mike found music, so he left bravely to pursue becoming a musician. His Amish skills helped him in the end though. Mike Silverman has his own homemade instruments. Mainly The Magic Pipe, but he also has a The Magic Boot, and the Magic Saw. He is a 1 man band and has been playing at venues/ university's since 1990. He has 3 full release albums

Personal Note:
I am proud to say I have had the honor to see this guy 3 times. 2 times at a music festival in the summertime, and once in a tiny venue called the '8X10'. At the 8X10, since it is such a small venue, artists go there with the intention of mingling with the fans after the show. I had the honor of meeting him and he's such a gentleman. He is absolutely amazing at his shows as well. Not only does he WOW you with his magic pipe, but the music he plays to the magic tricks he preforms while playing his songs are so entertaining. You will see nothing else like it.

Derek Vincent Smith, or 'Pretty Lights' is an American electronic music artist who got the stage name Pretty Lights from a Pink Floyd poster. Typical story with this guy, he went to college and dropped out to pursue his love for music and got lucky by starting to do shows with bands such as STS9 and Widespread Panic. He mainly does the festival scene, you can catch a show more than likely in the summertime.
He mainly takes samples from songs and mixes them with 2 or 3 other songs adding a bass heavy beat to dance too. He also writes his own songs. Pretty Lights is also well known for his live performance. A brightly lit block-like stage lights up the entire night sky with bright vibrant colors and crazy 3D-esque visuals. It is also provided with speakers 3X as big as your body. Just to make sure you get that buzz feeling going on in your body due the heavy bass. Pretty Lights has 3 full album releases

Personal Note:
I also have been blessed to have seen this man live. I saw him at the SAME music festival I saw That 1 Guy at. If you want me to REALLY brag about it, I saw him RIGHT after Primus played for about 2 hours. His set went from 11pm to 5am. No joke. And I stayed and danced the ENTIRE time. I cannot express the beauty of the show he puts on. His stage set up is one of the most impressive things I've seen ever.

Thundercat (not thundercats.) Is a newcomer to the music scene. His music is mainly electronic jazz wave. Thundercat is just 1 person Stephen Bruner who is also a member of the thrash band Suicidal Tendency. He's barely past 20, and has an addiction to 80's cartoons. Other than that we really don't know much about him, but thanks to his recent full release album
'The Golden Age Of The Apocalypse'
I'm sure we will find out a lot about him soon.

When my boyfriend played this album for the first time I was instantly hooked. It's awesome background music for a party or something. And then when you get all drunk and groovy it's some of the funnest music to dance to. Did I also mention a lot of tracks are relaxing?

Dananananaykroyd is a band that formed in 2006. Hailing from Glasgow Scotland, they got their name from.......hold your breath!.........the film star Dan Aykroyd. Mainly they harbor an indie-pop/ post hardcore music style. There are currently 6 members.

Personal Note:
To be honest I'm not too into this band. I have to admit though, sometimes when a song by them comes on there are moments where I'm just like 'WHOA where the hell did that riff come from?' They surprise me sometimes. Not gonna lie.

Portugal. The Man was formed in 2002 and is well known for their original sound especially the singer's vocal chords. The music scene most established with this band is psychedelic American pop. Originally Portugal. The Man was made as a side project by lead singer John Gourley. It wasn't until after the demise of "Anatomy Of A Ghost" that Portugal. The Man came in full force. They currently hold 5 members:

Personal Note:
I've been listening to this band for a while and the shear original sound is what makes me love this band the most.

100 monkeys is an improv funky rock band. As they like to put it their music is influenced by "Drinking, the devil, death and women who cheat and steal." They are most known for the audience participation segment of their live shows, where they take suggestions from the audience on what they should sing about in an improv song.
They formed in 2008 by realizing that all 5 members had an ability to play a large amount of different instruments. They gained the most popularity due to Jackson Rathbone being a member, and his new stardom, thanks to films such as the Twilight saga and The Last Airbender.

Personal Note:
I saw this band live this past summer 2011. It was SO MUCH FUN! High energy, great opening bands, (it was also the first time I could legally drink at a show). I don't think I've heard girls scream SO loud in my entire life over Jackson. They did an audience participation improv song about belly buttons. After the show they all came out signed posters and whatnot. All of them are very nice.

Brite Futures (formerly known as Natalie Portman's Shaved Head), is an American Electronic/Indie band. Formed in 2005 they got their name due to Natalie Portman's character in the movie 'V for Vendetta'. The band originated from 2 of the male members wanting to get girlfriends in college. This band is most noted for their simple, yet catchy lyrics. They also make sure to put Natalie Portman on their guest list EVERY show they do, just in case she decides to stop by and listen. Natalie Portman has yet to see a show.

Personal Note:
I just recently began to listen to this band, and for the most part I feel like it's dumb. But at the same time its excellent. I'm kind of confused on how I feel. The beats are great, the attitude is hilarious, the lyrics are dumb (not in a bad way, on purpose I guess?) It's overall a mixed feeling.

Circle Takes The Square is a "blend of progressive experimentation and DIY hardcore, metal, and noise...characterized by a natural fusion of grindcore and the sweeping guitar dynamics of post-punk." (wikipedia quote). I didn't know how to explain it myself lol. They are in the process of making their second full length album which has taken 5 years to complete. This band is most noted for their poetic lyrics, intense breakdowns and female background singer. They have toured with such bands as Thursday and Portugal. The Man.

I learned about this band when I played Digital Devil Saga. I absolutely love her voice.

Ratatat is a duo from NYC. The style of music is considered electronic rock, dance punk. They have been making music since 2001. I saw them live. It was effing brilliant. I had so much fun AND IT WAS SO LOUD! Circa Survive is a 'Indie, Experimental, Progressive rock band'. The band's lead singer Anthony Green was the lead singer to the band Saosin but felt like he would be miserable if he was signed to a record label with the band. So he left, went back home and had some jam sessions with a close friend. That is when Circa Survive was born. They are well known for the lead singer Anthony Green who has his own solo albums and is also connected to other bands such as The Sound of Animals Fighting,
This Day Forward and Taken. They are also well known for their first full length album Juturna and the influences used to make the album such as House of Leaves (book), The Boondock Saints, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Personal Note:
Circa Survive is one of my favorite bands. The reason I chose this song is because it's my favorite. I actually got permission from the band to use this song in one of the short films I've made. This song made me buy a copy of 'House Of Leaves' which I'm currently reading and thoroughly enjoying. I saw them live FOR FREE. It was a secret show in Baltimore, and if you were in the first 100 people, you got in for free. Me and a few friends stood in the rain for 2 hours to get a spot. I hold them as one of the top 10 best shows I've ever seen. It was so full of emotion. This band never fails to amaze me.

Heavy Heavy Low Low (HHLL) is a band that is quite one of a kind. They are generally considered metal, but over the years have changed what kind of metal they play. It started as Thrashcore and changed to Metalcore but here recently with their last album release have ultimately been deemed 'Experimental Metal'. I still call them Mathcore. They formed in 2004 and are still together and touring. They are well known for their sloppy sound and overall noise. I would call their music noise for sure. They are also well known for their openly heavy partying lifestyles.

This song is obviously about a fatal car crash.

Mellowdrone is a Lo-Fi, Indie, Experimental rock band. The first formed in 1999 and are still currently together. They are most noted for the fact that a lot of their songs are in other media productions such as Project Runway, Six Feet Under, and Cane. Their songs also appear in the FIFA 07 soundtrack, Project Gotham Racing 2, the movie Prom Night and the movie Dread.

I saw this band open for 'She Wants Revenge' the show was so laid back and mystical it put me in a trance, and then they would come in with some heavy hitting guitar rifts to bring you back to reality. It was quite enjoyable.

Nosaj Thing is an Asian DJ who was raised in LA. His music is Electronic experimental hip hop. He is most known for the fact he started being a DJ in 1999 at the age of 14. He was always musically inclined. He is currently still making music and DJing. He has collaborated with Kid Cudi.

Personal Note:
I love this guy. He opened for Bassnectar and totally blew me away. Especially with the song I chose. I love how it makes you feel like your underwater, having a hard time breathing or in a tightly confined space.
This song is best turned up at a normal volume but with the bass more on the heavy side.

This guy is awesome. He has a lot of talent for remixing movies into modern day songs. He does it well too. It's quite amazing. My boyfriend saw him open for The Blue Man Group and introduced to me him. He also said he was amazing.

My first real high school boyfriend showed me this band. I don't really listen to them that much but I do enjoy the sound.

I learned about this guy very recently thanks to the show Workaholics. His song is in the beginning of the second episode of season 2 where they try to quit drinking for a week. When I heard it I was instantly hooked. It's so catchy and wobbly. Best when you got the bass turned up real loud. The entire EP this song comes off of 'Satin Panthers' is excellent. This song is the most unique song off the the EP.

Genghis Tron is a Extreme metal, electronic music, grindcore band from NYC. They started in 2004 and are currently still together although they have announced that they are taking a break for a while in 2010. They are well known for their mash up of math-core and electronic music and the fact that all 3 members are the biggest looking nerds ever. They are also well known for their extensive list of genres tied to the band.

I love this band. They are awesome. It's 2 of my favorite genres of music in one fell swoop. Even my boyfriend likes it and hes not into the whole grindcore thing. The breakdowns are the best.
