Angry Video Game Nerd DVDs

Sort by: Showing 4 items
Rating: List Type:
The beginnings of AVGN, when he was just the Angry Nintendo Nerd. The first bonus feature, "What Was I Thinking?", recounts these beginnings on AVGN and how James got into it. That's definitely a highlight. The second disc is where the 'classic' AVGN starts to take shape. The 10 min+ running times and the more elaborate productions. The 'Bible Games' is the best episode on here, it's just incredibly hilarious. The 'Wii Salute' is the best of the extras, also hilarious.

Abhi's rating:
The Nerd has settled in a nice rhythm by this volume, producing a steady stream of high quality material. We see several guest stars and longer videos. It's hard to pick favourites here since everything is just so good, really. The more memorable ones are the Spiderman episode, with Spiderman himself playing the games and realising that they are utter crap. The Halloween episode is another highlight just for the hillbilly character. The third disc contains bonus features entirely, with some high quality stuff. The tour of the first nerd room (check out Vol. 4 for a tour of the newer Nerd room) and the vintage Nerd material are my favourites.

Abhi's rating:
This volume kicks off the trend for favouring game series to single game reviews. No complaints from me here, I prefer it that way. This volume is another set of high quality material, and is definitely the best Nerd material till Vol 4 came out, the Nerd just keeps getting better). My favourite overall has to be the two part Batman retrospective, because I love the character so much. Next in line is the Indiana Jones Trilogy, for similar reasons and the two Superman reviews, which are absolutely hilarious.

Chronologically Confused 2: Zelda Timeline (Feature)

Abhi's rating:
Overall, this has to be the best set of material released on DVD so far. The Nerd really adds some depth to his coverage of video game history, along with the trademark humor. The first disc is fantastically funny and the Odyssey system review is particularly impressive, since the "console" is from 1972. My favourite is the Terminator games retrospective. Two great movies, tons of shitty video games and one awesome strategy to get extra lives that didn't quite work. The second disc is weaker than the first one, but still very good. My favourite is the Godzilla episode. Clearly James loves his Castlevanis games, but 4 episodes, seriously? It's almost guaranteed to be boring at times unless you absolutely love the games. The third disc also has a solid, very funny set of game reviews. The extras are mostly shorter videos (though some are longer than 10 mins). It's a mixed bag, with the two tours of the Nerd room being the highlights here.

Disc 1:
Moonwalker (Genesis Game)
Milon's Secret Castle (NES Game)
Jaguar Part 1 & 2 (Console)
Metal Gear (NES Game)
Odyssey (Console)
X-Men (Game Series)
Terminator Part 1 & 2 (Game Series)
Transformers (Game Series)

Disc 2:
Mario's Missing (Game Series)
Plumbers Don't Wear Ties (3DO Game)
Crazy Castle (Game Series)
Godzilla (Game Series)
Castlevania Part 1,2,3 & 4 (Game Series)
Wayne's World (Game Series)

Disc 3:
Super Pitfall (NES Game)
Little Red Hood (NES Game)
Winter Games (NES Game)

Bonus Features:
* Making of Crazy Castle and Outtakes
* The Nerd's NES Collection
* Playing the Odyssey
* Creating the title cards

The Angry Video Game Nerd (a.k.a. AVGN) is the 'angriest gamer you've ever heard' as the intro puts it. He 'plays the worst games of all time' as a public service so all the other gamers can avoid them. Oh, he's also absolutely hilarious.

This list covers the AVGN DVDs released so far. They are usually released every December and have material that is at least a year old at the time. This other list has a lot of the original videos from Youtube.
