Unreleased Alternate Cuts Of Films I Want To See

Cliffhanger (1993)

Cliffhanger is a classic action movie, but it could have been even better. During the editing process, a lot of violent footage was excised to downgrade the rating from an NC-17 to an R. In its current form, it's a pretty light R, and that's disappointing. I would love to see a restored director's cut, full of the extra additions and all the little extra shots of blood and gore restored.

Footage from the work print version occasionally makes the rounds on YouTube, but the quality is unwatchable. It's below VHS standard. It's like seeing blobs of colour move around. So while there is that, I would love to see a full DC restored for Blu-ray, not a fan-edit that would need to intercut HD footage with unwatchable work print footage.

It's never going to happen, and that pains me.

Hard Target (1993)

Like most of John Woo's American movies, Hard Target took a torpedo in the editing suite, with the studio trimming a good 20 minutes of extra action and violence, and other stuff. Like Cliffhanger, deleted scenes do float around on YouTube in terrible quality, and there's even a director's cut torrent, but again it's fucking unwatchable.

Please release the full uncut director's version on Blu-ray, it would be the definitive version of this overlooked, underrated Van Damme actioner.

Galaxy Quest (1999)

This may be a surprise to some people, but Galaxy Quest at one point was a hard R, full of profane, vulgar dialogue and constant f-bombs. Sigourney Weaver has said that they swore their freaking asses off. You can even see that f-bombs were dubbed in a few scenes, most notably towards the end when Weaver says "Screw that!" when she clearly mouthes "Fuck that!"

I love this movie in its current form, and seeing an R-rated version would never replace the original, but goddamn I'd be curious to see the adult cut of this fun family movie.

Mad Max 2 is fucking amazing and in my top 50 of all time, but it was trimmed quite heavily during post-production. Action beats and shots of graphic violence were removed. And that pisses me off. Yeah, I still love this movie regardless, but man I'd love to see a full-blown director's cut that restores all the lost footage.

I doubt it'll ever happen. But that doesn't mean I don't want it.

Rumours abound about what was cut from this movie for its theatrical cut. This is the only instalment in the series not to get an extended cut, which is weird. Apparently something like a half-hour was cut, including extra subplots. In Simon West's commentary he talks about a scene of Christmas breaking up with Lacy. In the trailers there are extra lines of dialogue and action stuff we never see.

Other rumoured footage: a subplot involving Maggie's team, more with Chuck Norris (the trailer showed Chuck with the team at the beginning of the airport shootout), more of the Sly/Van Damme fight, and other action stuff.

None of this stuff shows up in the deleted scenes section of the Blu-ray. It's infuriating. I want an extended cut of this movie, which might make it better. It's bewildering that it hasn't happened, but at this point, one has to wonder if it ever will. Probably not.

Batman Forever is where this original Batman series deviated from the dark Tim Burton movies and started becoming campy and colourful, closer to the Adam West TV show. But this was not always the case. Reportedly, forty minutes of footage was excised for the theatrical version, including a subplot involving Bruce Wayne suffering from memory loss due to a gunshot wound. This, in turn, forced him to face the grief surrounding his alter ego. Fuck, that sounds awesome.

Director Joel Schumacher has expressed his wish to assemble a true directorโ€™s cut, but a lack of interest in the sequel likely kills any chance of a re-release. I'd be happy with all the deleted scenes separately on a new Blu-ray, but still doubtful it'll happen. Dang.

I LOVE this movie, it's one of my all-time favourite comedies. But it wasn't always 90 minutes long. The original cut was closer to 3 hours, but a lot of material was cut out, and now the deleted scenes are rotting somewhere in a studio vault. And that SUCKS. I've actually read the original screenplay, so I have a fair idea of what the deleted material would've been like, and a lot of it is actually hilarious. I kept trying to imagine what it would look like acted out by Steve Martin and John Candy, and a huge smile kept crossing my face. I NEED a restored director's cut!

The current Blu-ray is pretty shite, with a shoddy transfer and little in the way of extras, so a re-release would be prudent. Hell, the 30th anniversary is coming up, that'd be a golden opportunity to restore the extended cut and let the public finally see it!

MI2 wasn't always the tame movie that it turned out to be. John Woo (hey, another American Woo movie on this list!) made an R-rated, badass, violent action movie, but it was heavily cut by the studio. Woo's original edit was 3.5 hours long, for crying out loud. No doubt the story and characters would've been enhanced, and the bullet ballets would've been awesome.

We'll never get to see a director's cut, because the movie is so critically panned and Woo probably has no interest in returning, which is a damn shame. I love me some Woo-directed action, and the fact that some of his big-budget American work remains butchered is utterly heartbreaking.

Full disclosure: I love Titanic. It remains one of my all-time favourite movies. A wealth of deleted material showed up on the DVD and Blu-ray releases, which has actually been used for an extended fan-edit, but said fan-edit is not that good and not all of the scenes actually work.

A whole lot of other deleted scenes remain unseen. There are pictures floating around of deleted scenes, if you care enough to look. I'd just love to see the other scenes that were excised, because there's hours of footage just sitting around not being used. The DVD/Blu-ray producer actually addressed this, saying James Cameron was generous enough to let as many deleted scenes be released that he did, so that kills any chance of an alternate cut or a re-release with more deleted footage. Balls!

Scream was originally NC-17, but many of the more graphic scenes of violence were trimmed down to receive the more commercially-friendly R rating.

An uncut version has never been released in any form, but I'd definitely like to see it. We've seen unrated director's cuts of older movies like RoboCop, so why not Scream, especially given its cult status and box office success?

The movie was apparently changed radically in post. Director John McTiernan was fired, and Michael Crichton himself reshot a bulk of the movie after test screenings.

Even if McTiernan's original cut was crap, I'm still curious to see it since I trust Big John.

World War Z (2013)

In post-production, this movie went through 7 weeks of reshoots which added more meat to the story and provided an entire new final third.

Although the movie in its original form might have been bad enough to warrant the reshoots, I remain curious about what the original finale of the movie was like. It was a massive battle in Moscow. It was filmed, one assumes they started doing the special effects and so on... So would it be really hard for Paramount to show us what prompted everyone to freak out and re-do it?

Movies go through many different edits, and in some cases a lot of golden material is cut for the sake of rating or studio pressures.

Here are some (unreleased) alternate edits that I really hope to see one day.
