The Fly (1958)

I saw this last night and I 'm still reeling. What a harrowing and impressive story. I never would have thought something like this could have been officially released to the general public at the time. The gruesome murder that the film begins with was more than your average film death in the 1950s.
And then to retrace the steps, the events that led to the tragedy. Wow. This was very well written and made me feel strong emotions.
Monster rating : 5 stars
The Fly was a beautiful being and evoked sympathy. The doctor's anguish and frustration were relatable. An impressively constructed example of movie magic. Little furry arm and all.

So I wasn't expecting to feel desire towards a monster but here it happened. Whatever comes next?

Monster rating : 5 stars
What a sleek, mysterious and silent being!

American astronauts on Mars and out in space. Cigarettes and grenades on board. Each crew member waiting to die. A bit like Alien, really.
Monster rating : 4 stars.
This Martian reminded me of a Leaf-nosed bat. Human-like kind eyes. A strong and muscular body. It knew how to climb stairs and how to hide. Its' reptilian hands looked like they would be better suited for moving on four legs, like a lizard.

The Day of the Triffids (1963)

Oh man what a mishmash weirdo story.
Monster rating: 4 stars
The triffids appeared to be fast growing and mobile. They made a particular sound. And multiplied very rapidly.
I wish there had been more detailed views of the plants and their anatomy. It was mostly glimpses.

The copy that I watched was rather bad so it was hard to see the sprout-like aliens. It was so dark and fuzzy. Frank Gorshin who played The Riddler in the sixties Batman series was in this one too.
The main focus seemed to be on horny teenagers hell bent on making out in their cadillacs.
Oh and a fine silent film actor, Raymond Hatton played an angry elderly farmer.
Monster rating : 4 stars, wish they could have had more screen time and clearer, more detailed shots of their anatomy

Fiend Without a Face (1958)

You must wait until the last 10 minutes of this film for the visual reward. Some mind blowing animation!

The Little Shop of Horrors (1960)

I liked the monster better than the movie.
Monster rating : 5 stars
Audrey the meat loving plant was fascinating. If it was a real being I would love to marvel at it in person. The idea of it developing new flowers that looked like the things it consumed was amazing.

The Black Scorpion (1957)

Monster rating : 5 stars
Super duper animation magic! Soulful eyes.
Story rating : 4 stars
Very entertaining in places but too much romance + military stuff for my liking.

This was pretty good!
Monster rating : 5 stars
Wow, these pals (sea mollusks?) were ravishing. Headlight lamps for eyes.
I wish there was a film from their point of view. Like how does a nuclear radiated mutant species of giant snaily pals survive in a world of hostile humans.

The She-Creature (1956)

Monster rating : 4
The monster looked like a female body builder with bolted on breasts and a sleek blonde wig. Extremely muscular and strong. She didn't get much screen time, as often happens in these monster things.
She roared like a lion or a bear.
(the film itself was tedious but it was ok because of the monster bits)

Revenge of the Creature (1955)

This sequel could have been so much better. They had the chance to shape the destiny and legend of the Creature, make him do anything. So what the hell did they chain him up for? To have him be the next performing sensation at Sea Life? Surely the mere stress of being a captive in a chlorine pool would have been enough to kill him. But no, all he wanted was to get close to yet another blonde human female and then to carry her around endlessly. What were they thinking? What a wasted opportunity.
Monster rating : 5 stars
Yes, the Creature is an astonishingly built monster. I wish I looked like him.

The Wasp Woman (1959)

Monster rating : 5 stars
Got nice clear views of the Wasp lady and the face was very well made.
Story rating : 4,5 stars

The film was a bit lousy. I didn't need to see all that stuff with the humans and their desire to scare, torture and kill the insect. A lot of military stuff.
Monster rating : 4,5 stars, wish there was even more footage of it in the film. What a beauty it was!

The Crawling Eye (1958)

Weird goings on on a mountain top. A clairvoyant girl who received messages from outerspace eye-monsters. There's a ski lodge with several boring guests. People getting decapitated.
Monster rating : 4 stars
Gosh it was a long wait to catch a glimpse of the Crawling Eyes in this film. They didn't appear until the very final 15 minutes. But it was worth the wait. They do a Moog meow sound and have wiggly rope like tentacles. Very sweet looking things.

Beast from Haunted Cave (1959)

The monster in the film was designed and portrayed by actor Chris Robinson. According to him, the design of the beast, which he nicknamed "Humphrass", was based on a wingless hangingfly. In order to create the creature's skeletal form, Robinson added aluminum stripping to a plywood base, then covered the frame with chicken wire before wrapping it in sheets and muslin. He then soaked the frame in vinyl paint in order to waterproof the design, since it had to be used in the snow. The creature's head was fashioned out of quarter-inch aluminum wire, which was then encased in steel wire and wrapped in muslin. The creature's fangs and teeth were also constructed with aluminum wire. Robinson then placed putty and patches of crepe hair onto the design before adding spun glass in order to give it a cobwebby appearance."

Not of This Earth (1957)

Monster rating : ?
The promotional material was promising more than it would deliver. The actual alien bloke looked like a normal human being with dark shades on. Towards the end of the film he conjures up this thing that looks like a cross between a collapsed umbrella and a used up handkerchief with a crab attached to it. It made guinea pig noises. This thing flies over to a man's house and kills him. Other than that there were really no monsters to talk of in this.
