2014- Best to Worst

I went to the theatre planning to see A Most Wanted Man, but when I found out that Boyhood was playing for one night only I decided to take that opportunity instead because I've been waiting to see it all year. This movie definitely lived up to the hype. It was my most anticipated movie of this year and it looks like it's going to be my favorite movie of the year. The idea for this movie was executed as great as I thought it would be and there were times where I forgot I was watching a movie. That's how real this movie felt. The acting is essential, the writing was great and not once did this movie feel too long or drag on. This movie tops Before Sunrise as Richard Linklater's best movie and he had a lot of patience to keep working on this project for 12 years.

As some of you might already know, I hate Matthew McConaughey as an actor. I thought he was terrible back then and I seem to be in the minority of people who thinks that he's still the bad actor he was back then except with serious roles he can't pull off. This movie however is the only one I've seen where he actually delivers a exceptional performance. As for the movie, it was fantastic. It was a powerful emotional journey and the movie never felt overlong or anything with it's almost 3 hour time length. The acting was great, the story was great, the visuals looked amazing and I just loved everything about this movie. It doesn't top Boyhood, but it is the second best movie of the year.

The original Planet of the Apes is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I was really looking forward to this movie and it also helped that Rise of the Planet of the Apes was good. This movie is actually better than Rise. In this day and age where summer blockbusters are mindless action movies, it's great to see an intelligent movie that has a great story and character development. I really loved how this movie focused on the apes, but still made the humans a big part of the movie. It's a movie that doesn't have any action in it until the second act, but when the action starts it's amazing. We get some great special effects and I loved seeing them in 3D. The acting is really great in this movie. Andy Serkis does an amazing job as Caesar and Gary Oldman delivers a performance that is just as great as you would expect. This is the best movie of the year and I'm not sure if there's going to be anything else that will top it. I might say this quite a bit, but this is a movie you have to see it theatres. It's the kind of movie that is meant to be experienced on the big screen and see it in 3D too because it's one of those rare times where the 3D is actually worth the extra money for.

If you're a fan of Roger Ebert or his TV show with Gene Siskel then this movie is a must-see. While it's not the best movie of the year, it is the best documentary of 2014 and perhaps one of my favorite documentaries of all time. I'm not going to say too much about it, but just how the movie tells the story of his life is fascinating and for a documentary that was two hours the time really went by fast while watching this.

This movie is just as great as the hype makes it out to be. The special effects are unsurprisingly amazing, the characters were memorable and this movie shows that creativity in Hollywood films is not completely dead. I usually don't like it when these kinds of movies begin with a depressing scene, but in this movie it wasn't a problem. It was pretty ballsy of Marvel to do that and it also adds some depth to the main character. This is the best Marvel movie to date. It tops The Avengers in every way and it's one of the best movies of the year.

I was originally going to see The Monument's Men, but since I've heard mixed things about it, I decided to see this instead. I'm glad I did because this is the best animated movie I've seen since Toy Story 3. It had lots of creative ideas, some really likable characters and most of all it was hilarious. I don't think I've laughed this much while watching an animated movie before. It also had some heartwarming scenes which added to how great this movie is. Whether you're a kid or an adult, this movie will have something for you to enjoy.

Some people may consider this a 2013 movie, but I consider it a 2014 movie.

This is the first movie I saw in theatres this year and it looks like 2014 might be a better year for movies than last year. This movie is the best war movie that's based on a more recent war. It was gripping, disturbing and very realistic. Mark Wahlberg also delivers his best performance since Boogie Nights. While I was disappointed with some of the movies 2013 had to offer, this movie gives me hope that 2014 will be an awesome year for movies.

This is one of those rare times where a sequel to a comedy is even funnier than the original. It has more jokes and it is just as self-aware as the first one. Not only that, but there is never a dull moment with this movie and it also has a few twists which was cool to see in this kind of movie. Overall this was a great sequel and it is the funniest movie of the year.

This movie is even better than the first one. First of all it's different from all the other Marvel movies and the character development in this movie is first-rate. I also loved seeing the backstory of Nick Fury. The action in this movie is awesome and whenever the Black Widow was kicking someone's ass I thought about how great it would be if there was a Black Widow movie. Sure there aren't any good female superhero movies, but it could be the first good one. The only flaw I have with this movie is that it did seem to drag on at certain times, but this was a highly entertaining movie and it gives me hope that 2014 will be a better year for movies.

When I saw the trailer for this movie, I knew I had to see it in theatres. It did not disappoint at all. As great as the Godzilla suit was in Gojira, his new look was awesome and I just enjoyed seeing a modern version of Godzilla with great special effects. After all these years they finally gave us the remake that Godzilla deserved. The only problem I had with this movie is that the action scenes felt a little too short at certain times, but it doesn't matter too much when the action scene near the end was so great.

I don't see how anyone that's a fan of the first movie wouldn't love the sequel. It continues the story to the first movie perfectly and it has the same amount of gory fun that made the first movie great. I saw this movie in 3D since it was the only option I had and the 3D really added to the experience of this movie.

Screw the negative reviews! This was everything I wanted in an AVGN movie! It's got great humor, it's very self-aware and even though the effects are cheesy they're supposed to be that way and it's nice to see practical effects instead of just CGI effects. I have been a fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd's work for years and I wasn't disappointed with it at all. This movie was definitely worth the long wait.

I think the reason this movie got mixed reviews is because it wasn't what most people were expecting. What I saw was something different and refreshing. It's really more of a sci-fi film than an action film. It does have some action, but it's more focused on the story. I really love that this movie did something different with the premise instead of turning it into a typical action movie. It was surprisingly thought-provoking and Scarlett Johansson is great in this movie. This is definitely going to be a love it or hate it film. Some people will hate this movie, some will just be dissapointed with this movie, but there will be some people who will enjoy it for what it is. This movie wasn't exactly what I expected, but I was still impressed with it.

Since the weather at the ski hill was too cold, my grandpa asked me if I wanted to see a movie with him and I said yes. Out of all the movies that were playing in theatres this is the one I wanted to see the most. This was a very solid thriller. The build-up to the movie was amazing and while it does have a similar plot to The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, the movie manages to do something fresh with the plot. This was a highly entertaining thriller that doesn't slow down until it ends.

While this isn't the great movie I was anticipating it to be, it was still pretty good. Nicolas Cage's performance was great and everyone else delivers a solid performance, but the story is the weakest part of the movie. It's not bad or anything, but it isn't anything special. Still the writing is pretty good and it's one of those movies that even people who don't like Nicolas Cage will still like this one.

Screw the critics! This was a very interesting movie with a good premise. Sure the premise may not be original, but it was still very well-executed. Unfortunately, this movie is under-appreciated due to people expecting a typical sci-fi movie when it's much more than that. I was kind of surprised this movie was able to keep its PG-13 rating since it does have quite a bit of blood for a movie with that rating.

If you're expecting this movie to be as good as the first one then you will be disappointed. However, if you're just looking for a funny movie like I was then this movie might deliver. This movie had some good laughs and I liked how this movie went in a different direction than the first one. It's nowhere near as funny as the first movie, but it's good in its own right and it's worth seeing when there's nothing else playing in theatres.

This wasn't as bad as it's made out to be. Sure it's is not as funny as Ted. It doesn't even come close to matching the comedic brilliance of Ted, but it still has a lot of good jokes even if most of them don't hit bullseyes. I did have second thoughts about this movie when it started because it started off on a somewhat depressing note, but the good thing about this movie is that it kept on getting more funny as it went on. There was this scene Seth MacFarlane drank that whole hallucinogenic drink that was for the whole tribe and then we get this weird trip scene. That scene was so funny that it almost made me bump up my rating to an 8. The biggest flaw I had with this movie was the way it used its cast. While Charlize Theron's role was used pretty well, it does waste some of its talent quite a bit. Liam Neeson's was decent, but he isn't in much of the movie. Neil Patrick Harris was used pretty well, but should've been in more of the movie. Sarah Silverman's had some funny lines, but her role was weird. The talent that was wasted the most in this movie was Amanda Seyfried's character. Why? Because Seth MacFarlane barely writes anything comedic for her. She was just the eye candy for this movie. If Megan Fox was in this movie instead of her then it wouldn't change a thing. Overall it's not a comedy you really need to see in theatres, but if you're a fan of Seth MacFarlane then you definitely shouldn't avoid it. It's better than some of the comedies that came out last year.

I was originally going to avoid this movie, but when I saw positive reviews saying that it's an improvement over the first one I decided to check it out. Now this movie improves on what the first movie lacked. The first Purge movie had unlikable characters, terrible writing and the movie took place in one location and that just ruined the amount of potential that the premise had. This one takes place in the streets which is a better location for this kind of movie to take place and it also has some good action scenes and it does improve on some of the flaws that the first movie had. It's still not great though as I thought that the characters lacked depth and some of the acting wasn't good. It's a good sequel, but it's nothing great and it isn't something I would watch again.

This really wasn't anything special. The writing was average, the plot was weak and Kevin Costner delivers an performance that's OK at best. The action scenes were good at first, but by the third act they started to get tedious and the father/daughter problems just didn't work for this kind of movie. It's a somewhat entertaining movie, but it's one you'll forget about right after watching it.

This movie really wasn't that funny. It had some funny jokes every now and then, but it is nowhere near as funny as the movie wants to be which sucks because it had a good comedic premise and when a movie has a good comedic premise and it isn't a funny movie then that means it wasn't executed well.

This movie has one fatal problem that ruins this movie: It's PG-13. Hell, I watched the unrated version and it barely has any blood. It's obviously just some extra 5 minutes of footage, but they shouldn't call it the unrated version if it has just as much blood as a pricked finger. Now I have nothing against PG-13 movies, but it's clear that this movie was meant to be rated R. Most of the action in this movie revolves on gun violence and that's a problem. The action in this movie is mostly mediocre at best and while there were some cool special effects every now and then, there were also other times where I was thinking "God, that would be cooler if there was some blood." Also it just doesn't have the humor that was part of what made the second movie good. The only line in this movie I found amusing was Arnold's line that I quoted. Another thing I really hated this movie was how it wastes it's cast on a very boring action movie and it also adds unnecessary cast members that add nothing to the movie whatsoever. This movie just takes away everything that make The Expendables 2 good and all it's nothing, but a soulless summer blockbuster movie which was the opposite of what the previous movie was. It was a self-aware action movie that also made the best out of its legendary cast. While I wasn't a fan of the first Expendables by any means, it still had some good action scenes even if the script was lacking. This movie had the potential to be the best in the series, but instead it's the worst and Sylvester Stallone really sold-out with this movie.

This is the worst movie I've seen that came out this year and I don't think any other movie that came out this year can top this one. This movie was really unfunny and there were times where I couldn't even tell if this movie was even trying to be funny or not. The acting was terrible and the actors in the movie seemed embarrassed to say their lines. There's this one scene where Jason Segel's character gets attacked by a dog and it's not funny since they treat it very seriously considering how dark it is and the dramatic music in the background playing. The only good performance in this movie was Jack Black's cameo, but even his character didn't get any funny lines and the main problem with this movie is that I didn't laugh once. Not once! I like Jason Segel, but this movie is just awful and it's just a poor excuse for a comedy.

This movie is a travesty in every way. The movie actually gave away what was so awful about it right from the beginning of the movie. It starts off with a woman getting brutally beat up and that was when I had a feeling that the movie was not going to redeem itself. Needless to say, it didn't. This was just an awful movie. The tone was just too dark, the characters were borderline unlikable and the action scenes would be good if it wasn't for these problems. This is just a travesty in every way and it's the worst Arnold Schwarzenegger movie I've ever seen.
