Agreed. Tags would be very useful if only they weren't heavily abused.

But best would be some import from IMDB but I don't think they provide a list of all their tags.

IMDb has a different set of rules for tags, though. For instance, genres are not tags on IMDb.

Any tag related issues, however, are on hiatus now, because the tag admin feature is not working yet on Listal 2.0. I can't even see who's tagging what in order to warn/ban any users adding offensive or spammy tags.

The tag admin feature for Mods has finally been fixed, so another mod or I will look through all reported profiles/tags when we get the chance.

I believe prevention is better than cure.
Tags such as "pretty", "not pretty", "cute", "gorgeous", "handsome", "beautiful", "sexy", and offensive words like "moron", "retarded", etc. should be blacklisted once and for all, in other words the system should not accept them by default.

I would be all for that. I'd much rather have tags that were based on facts and not opinions.

People would get creative after a while. And then the tags would look like this : $exy, @mazing, hhot, /moron/, prettty, verypretty, hand some... etc

If it happens, then you add $exy and @mazing and h0t... to the blacklist too! The point is you do that once and for all for each word, not every time it is used again and again.

Ok, just my two cents. Why is it that people seem to think everyone makes tags for the global benefit of this site? 99% of the tags I've ever made are strictly a genre or feature of the movie. Having said that until private tags are made I've used some tags that are abbreviations for something that holds only meaning for me. I use that to track certain movies and it is strictly for my benefit. In fact every movie that I've tagged as horror, drama, action, etc. was strictly for my own use. If it benefits others then that's just an added bonus. Most of the tags I'd agree with but, things like "amazing" or "great actor" being removed are a little ridiculous. Sure they serve no benefit to me but they're not malicious and might actually have some use to someone else to keep track of.

I see what you mean, but Listal seems to tell us otherwise: use tags to describe the item. All the provided examples are descriptions, not personal notes. :)

I personally don't mind the good tags. When I go to edit a person's tags, it's almost always just to get rid of something rude or offensive. I also sometimes get rid of ones that couldn't possibly be of any benefit -- like tagging a person with their own name. As in tagging Kate Moss with "Kate Moss," which I can't foresee having any real benefit.

But I understand using tags for your own personal use. I often tag models with the name of a brand they've modeled for before, and I've seen other people doing this too. So really, I don't delete tags that aren't downright offensive and out of hand. I'll usually even leave "ugly" or somewhat similar terms because if that's how someone feels, then so be it. It's when it becomes "UGLY SKANK" or some shit that I take it down.

As with any issue though, other moderators might operate differently on this.

@Gauntlet Currently moderators can not edit the tags of films only people. That really is the place where most of the offensive tags seem to be located.

If movies do get included then yep... I agree with you that *only* offensive tags should be removed. There are a lot of people who use a personal tag on films to mark them as something that they personally added, want to watch, or have watched.

Personally, I find that tags are the most effective if only searching through items I personally have added and not look at the global tags. People have strange ideas about what to tag films. The 'spiritual' tag is pretty much a joke if you are looking at the global tag... but well if "Star Wars" rocked someones world and they found it to be spiritual then who am I to judge.

Ah, and also would like to avoid the 'zombie' and 'not zombie' debate regarding the tagging of some horror films. Seems like what is a zombie film is different for each individual ;)

There is at least one member who tags items with their screen name. Which is only annoying because they have better taste in movies then I do.

I also just delete tags that are complete nonsense like "mermaid" or "deserves an oscar" when the profile is of someone who is not even an actor.

I've lost the ability to tag based on tags from over 3 years ago. I think a warning should have been in order rather than the complete removal of the ability to tag.

I didn't post any of this racist or vulgar stuff, just some things that would allow me to sort 'people' profiles easier... and like I said, it was all over 3 years ago. I've been with this site since nearly the beginning, and I've added alot to this community through valuable tags (I'm the guy who started the birthdate tags) and I think it's pretty senseless to completely remove my ability to use one of the top 3 most useful features of this site.

Personally, I think the tags that only list movies the person has been in are FAR more 'useless' than the tags that I was using. With all the porn that seems to go unnoticed on this site, I'm pretty upset that I've been dealt with in this manner and I'm pretty disappointed.

Please forgive, I'm only human and am limited by what information is availabe to us. There's no way for me to know how long ago a tag was posted so I apologize for that. I'll admit to being the one who banned you. We ban people for "tag spam" all the time. And I sent you an explanation. It wasn't for vulgar or racist content. If you didn't receive the explanation I'm sorry and I'd be more than happy to send you a personal message explaining. The ban has been lifted.

Also, I was trying to clean up the "hot pussy" tag while also cleaning up porn so it's not that those things go unnoticed, it's just that sometimes an innocent gets caught in the middle.

I don't know anymore..

I wanted to tag certain celebrity women with "breast implants" or something similar, of which there is one or two tags, but it seems most actresses do not have such a tag and I wondered if it had been banned.

I don't feel safe doing it at the risk of running afoul of the admins (I was warned already about a tag mentioned here, but that was understandable, even though I could defend it if I was asked to).. Whereas now, we seem to be including things that are merely not desirable or seem unnecessary, which I can sympathize with to an extent, but this is really supposed to be about "horrific" tags...I would define that, somewhat loosely, as racial/homophobic/gender/ethnic slurs and similar nasty labels or language.

Here's a mods opinion on this. Tag moderating is tedious and time consuming. For example, to clean up Hot Pussy as a tag I have to go to each of those actresses profiles and delete every time someone tagged her with that tag. That's not to say it doesn't need done, but it's not like I can just blacklist the tag. I delete it and warn the poster. To do each actress takes about 5 minutes.

I also answer reports to delete pics, clean up inappropriate lists and send warnings to users that are violating rules. Not to mention I sometimes get on listal just to play and be a site user.

Essentially, this is a small part of a big problem. When you guys post a specific actress with one or two bad tags I can fix that in a decent amount of time. These other tags take longer. I'm working on them, but it's gonna take a while.

Fingers crossed that Tom is able to come up with a way to blacklist tags.

While I don't particularly see the point of adding 'breast implants' as a tag, at least it would be a factual tag. 'Hot pussy' is just the opinion of someone with too much time (and probably other things) on their hands. Opinion based tags really are the problem here, they add nothing to the profile of anyone, whereas factual connections add a network to the site (Oscar winner, child actor, silent films, golden era, I could go on... if my brain was awake yet). I don't much use tags myself... partly because of the mess they are in.

Fingershuffler49 adds 'Ugly', Turbothumb64 angrily responds 'Not ugly'... as you can see, extremely helpful. Maybe now we can find all the women on Listal who are definitely 'not ugly'. Perhaps we could help by adding 'definitely not ugly' or 'Turbothumb64 is blind'. We have a plan... or not!
