Ernst Ingmar Bergman (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈɪŋmar ˈbærjman] ( listen); 14 July 1918 – 30 July 2007) was a Swedish director, writer and producer for film, stage and television. Described by Woody Allen as "probably the greatest film artist, all things considered, since the invention of the motion picture camera," he is recognized as one of the most accomplished and influential film directors of all time.[3]
He directed over sixty films and documentaries for cinematic release and for television, most of which he also wrote. He also directed over one hundred and seventy plays. Among his company of actors were Harriet Andersson, Liv Ullmann, Gunnar Björnstrand, Bibi Andersson, Erland Josephson, Ingrid Thulin and Max von Sydow. Most of his films were set in the landscape of Sweden. His major subjects were death, illness, faith, betrayal, bleakness and insanity.
Bergman was active for more than six decades. In 1976, his career was seriously threatened as the result of a botched criminal investigation for alleged income tax evasion. Outraged, Bergman suspended a number of pending productions, closed his studios, and went into self-imposed exile in West Germany for eight years.

Vastly Overrated (11 person items)"Wow, I have seen most of his films and bloody hell are they nothing special. Seriously. Wild Strawberries is average at most. Also it doesn't help that Listal users have overrated all of his movies compared to IMDb rating. He is a below average director, but an excellent director at "wasting my time".
King of the dreary movies, no wonder Swedes always have been suicidal.
He's overrated, he's NOT the king of cinema, no one is. Just fucking accept it you dumb people, now you've pissed me off,"

Favorite Directors' Quotes (27 person items)""I write scripts to serve as skeletons awaiting the flesh and sinew of images."
"People ask what are my intentions with my films — my aims. It is a difficult and dangerous question, and I usually give an evasive answer: I try to tell the truth about the human condition, the truth as I see it. This answer seems to satisfy everyone, but it is not quite correct. I prefer to describe what I would like my aim to be. There is an old story of how the cathedral of Chartres was struck by lightning and"
