Well it looks like the most interesting thread on Listal just went up in flames!! Gemlil, Prelude, Voxy, fancy doing your thing now please?? (Is there any way to delete the actual posts so that there isnt a long stream of "deleted off topic" "deleted" etc there?) I know some of this above was on topic, but it still ruins the thread...

Right, I really liked this thread, so Im re-releasing it back to the wild, consider it a trial.

I think a two sentance minimum will suffice as indication of a good post. (Other mods) feel free to re-lock this if you dont agree. :)

Nice work Lil! This thread is one of the most interesting ones going.

What are peoples views on the secrecy surrounding certain religions? Are people being too suspicious? Is there nothing being hidden or are we getting the edited truth to suit someones agenda etc? Im not talking scientology here, thats just a crock of bull, but certain other religions are highly suspect. Mormons for example, their religion is founded on a man being told by God to go out in to the mountains where he had hidden 2 plates made of Gold with instructions on them, and he told him to build a religion around it... Now i mean....what the hell?! Are they for real?! If God today, told me to go out and find 2 plates in a mountain and i found them and they had information on etc, id want every scientist in the world working on a way to find out how, who, where, why etc this happened and a way to communicate back saying "Do your own dirty work G"

It seems like now days new religions tend to me money making schemes. But whos to say a lot of the older religions weren't either? Im not taking a pop at the bigguns like Christianity, Islam or Judaism, (im not listing every religion here...)

The lawful thing God hates most is divorce. (Abu Dawud)
these are hadith which means sayings from our holy prophets and our lord.

I'm not religious, but do consider myself to be 'spiritual'. As an example of what I believe: the universe isn't mechanistic, but an interconnected web of processes and energy patterns, and seemingly indiviual, autonomous parts are actually just transiently stable abstractions of a greater whole. I believe this greater whole encompasses the entire universe and, quite probably, something beyond the 'physical'. Which includes consciousness; whilst I don't believe in an 'afterlife' as such, I do believe consciousness to be eternal, and that, once we die, our individual concsiousness is re-absorbed into a 'sea of consciousness', from where it may re-emerge in another fleetingly stable form. Furthermore, I think physics (particularly quantum theory) strongly points to such an interconnected universe, and that this will become increasingly the case with further advances in physical research and theory. So, I don't think physics and spiritualism need be incompatible, but the dogmatic nature of religion I have no truck with.

Asking people what their 'non religion' is seems a little strange.

Well, there is a difference between atheism, agnosticism, and spiritualism.
Richard A. Booth 15 years, 11 months ago at Jun 17 21:24 -
That's true, I hadn't thought about that.

Atheism: the disbelief in the existence of god(s).

Agnosticism: the belief that the existence or non-existence of god(s) is unknowable.

Spiritualism: a belief in god(s), a higher power, or any kind of spiritual plane of existence, but the belief is either largely undefined or outside the doctrine of traditional organized religion. See Richard A. Booth's Jun 14 20:07 post above, for example.

From American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition:

Nihilism is... "An approach to philosophy that holds that human life is meaningless and that all religions, laws, moral codes, and political systems are thoroughly empty and false. The term is from the Latin nihil, meaning 'nothing.'"
