The Notorious Landlady

4 years, 4 months ago at Sep 12 3:50
The pedigree is strong with The Notorious Landlady, but the final product doesn’t add up to much of anything. The pacing is lacking, the production values are strangely muted, and the star power is either miscast or gone to waste.   Director Richard Quine’s 1950s comedy output was never lacking in energy or imagination, with Operation Mad Ball and Bell Book and Candle being prime examples o... read more

When her husband disappears, Carly Hardwicke (Kim Novak) finds it impossible to rent a room in her London apartment, since everyone assumes she's a murderer. Recently arrived American diplomat William Gridley (Jack Lemmon), however, has no idea about her reputation. Sparks fly between the pair, and Gridley rents the room. When his boss, Franklyn Ambruster (Fred Astaire), learns what Gridley has blundered into, he reproves him until he meets the lovely Carly. The two men try to clear her name.

The pacing is lacking, the production values are strangely muted, and the star power is either miscast or gone to waste.   Director Richard Quine’s 1950s comedy output was never lacking in energy or imagination, with Operation Mad Ball and Bell Book and Candle being prime examples of his best work of the period. But the moment the 60s hit, something went off with his work.
