First Men in the Moon

After the artistic high of Jason and the Argonauts, First Men in the Moon is a drastic comedown. Here is a Ray Harryhausen movie where the limited budget shows, and instead of a cornucopia of tangibly strange stop-motion critters weโ€™re treated to men in rubber suits. This Harryhausen film takes over an hour to give you what you came here for. Consider that the first cinematic sin against it. ย ... read more

Description: Based on the HG Wells story. The world is delighted when a space craft containing a crew made up of the world's astronauts lands on the moon, they think for the first time. But the delight turns to shock when the astronauts discover an old British flag and a document declaring that the moon is taken for Queen Victoria proving that the astronauts were not the first men on the moon. On Earth, an investigation team finds the last of the Victorian crew - a now aged Arnold Bedford and he tells them the story of how he and his girlfriend, Katherine Callender, meet up with an inventor, Joseph Cavor, in 1899. "The United Nations sends a team of multinational astronauts to the moon. The men reach the moon only to find a Union Jack flag claiming the land for Queen Victoria. What's the secret behind the flag? A good sci-fi movie. I think proper fans of H.G. Wells may well frown on this British adaptation of his 1900 Strand Magazine serial. It still retains some of the Victorian values but updates the technology. The movie is stolen by Lionel Jeffries as the eccentric Professor Cavor who takes the caddis"

It's based on a HG Wells story, rather than Jules Verne.

This Harryhausen film takes over an hour to give you what you came here for. Consider that the first cinematic sin against it. ย  Another H.G. Wells adaptation that plays fast-and-loose with the source material, First Men in the Moon takes kernels of good ideas and does nothing with them. It takes too long to get going, waiting roughly forty-five minutes to plop us on the moon to then spend another forty-five minutes doing a slow build that fizzles out long before the climax. The thudding humor, pounding the same vaudevill” read more
