Hinrich, the son of a rich German landowner, falls in love with the beautiful daughter of one of his father's servants—despite opposition from both families. Hinrich offers to marry the girl at the same time his brother, Detlev, returns with an unscrupulous aristocratic bride of his own. The brothers’ rival claims to their father's estate prove to be the trigger for tragedy.
