Plot synopsis: Rick Leland (Bogart) is dishonorably discharged from the army on charges of theft. This is just a cover, as Leland is actually on a secret mission to uncover a Japanese espionage ring. To this end, he boards a Japanese freighter heading for the Orient. On board, he makes contact with Dr. Lorenz (Greenstreet), a jap sympathizer. Leland also becomes attracted to the beautiful miss Marlow (Astor), but is she to be trusted?
