I was surprised playing this, by how tank controls work well with a slightly more actiony game too. And one without fixed cameras, to boot.

Reverthion - PlayStation
A 3D arena fighting game about robots with tank controls, by Technosoft
Games where up moves the character forward, down moves it backwards and left and right serve to rotate it. This works really well with fixed camera angles, because then it doesn't matter where the camera is positioned, the controls don't change. It also works much better using D-Pad instead of analog stick.
