Any BlazBlue, really. I just don't know if it fits my criteria, the characters are sprites, but backgrounds seem maybe too 3D for this list.
Pixel art. One per game series, preferably. Only sprite-based/pixel art. No 3D-mixed like Xenogears (3D scenarios with 2D sprite-based characters) for example. Also, preferably no prerendered graphics (Donkey Kong Country) nor digitized (Mortal Kombat). Note also that many of these games look even better in motion, with silky smooth animation.
