Syrup (2013)
I don't think I've ever seen a movie so terribly put together. Oh my god. It was a series of plot cliches, yes, but that's not what made it awful. The timing was just so completely off, as if the script was written in a fill in the blank cliche sort of way and then haphazardly strung together. Like watching a film students rough draft. So much didn't make sense. The acting was bad, the message was -ugh. And I liked the trailer so much...
And what really pisses me off is that I have friends who aren't critical of what they watch. You see, I'm in the "things could be better" camp and they're in the "I just want to enjoy myself" camp. So where they have the blessed ability to step right over plot holes, I 'go down in that shit' and get stuck screaming, "Wtf?! Wtf?! This sucks!" For the uncritical viewer this movie hits its points-conflict introduction, conflict resolution, corporate back stabbing, the commitment phobic romance, repetition of the same conflict, the music, the actors' pretty faces, the questioning of our society's morals, the idea that marketing is manipulating us, reality is perception, and onwards...But what is the difference between gibberish and art? I guess you have to figure that out for yourself.

Don't watch: If you like character development.
Do watch: If you want a well acted anti-suicide message.

I don't understand why this movie is so well liked. I chalk it up to a fluke and the emphasis on the good acting vs. the formulaic plot.

Comments while watching:

Not quirky enough or realistic enough to be my type. A popcorny movie about not so popcorny material. I guess it's a good change for main stream audiences but it still had a lot of those cliched plot events I'm so sick of seeing. The fact that they treat the father's huge gambling problem like no big deal is iffy. Some good parts I guess but not v. memorable. The main characters are at least developed.

The Host (2013)
Why did I watch this movie, you ask? One answer: Kissing in the rain scene. Plus, I mean come on! It's a good idea- a love square with three human bodies? Yeah, okay, that does sound ridiculous.

Comments while watching it:

This movie is so fucking terrible and filled with cliches, essays should be written about it. The epitome of bad movies. Should I even bother to analyze the fucking ridiculousness? The acting, the dialogue- shockingly awful. It's like everything that makes popcorn movies bad was combined into one movie. Works more as a summary of the book then, you know, a movie. I'm really sick of this bullshit repetition of a guy asking "are you sure?" as some form of pseudo caring. Bc the womenz hate ze sex and so often do it only out of obligation. They cannot speak up for themselves and must be specifically asked and have their ability to decide for themselves emphasized by the man. How about a girl asking a guy if he's sure? Plus, the fact that they may very well be the last N. American humans means extra they don't have to have sex instead of why the fuck bother with the idiotic conversation? I feel embarassed for the actors in this movie. Gosh, so many plot holes. So minus the thinking which got them into the situation in the first place, they can't know Melanie is inside her bc...? They'll think she's lying ok. But she's probably going to be killed anyway- they're not going to let her go. So the alien has to prove she's good, is the plan? Or do these two never plan out any given action? Jesus, how can the acting be so bad? What exactly is the rational for keeping the thing alive? Seriously how can the movie not even bother to explain characters' actions to such an extent? Um I don't get it- Jared defends her and 2 minutes later into the movie he's asking what's gotten into everybody, she's the enemy? Could the character development get any worse? He defended her from being killed then treated like the enemy- trying to wrap my head around. Guess he wanted her body not what inhabited it? I should probably stop bothering. Oh god it's so bad. Wanda just puts on those sad puppy dog eyes and ughh. No need to describe what drives the guy's violent tendencies to kill her despite fact that it will hurt others. *sigh* Vulnerable, unable to protect herself main character at the mercy of others to choose to protect her. Shallow relationships, overly dramatic/emotional voice acting. I mean I could go on forever yet I'm still watching...

Didn't finish watching it (because it was kind of boring as well as awful) but after half finished watching it: Some seriously bad, corny dialogue. And kind of sexist and ridiculous. Why would she be so nice to the person who's holding her captive? Don't care if I finish it.

Peep World (2011)
Acts more like the 1st episode to a TV show than an actual movie. Yeah. Not good. Should have skipped the drama at the end. Too many characters for any good development to happen. Funny at parts but not good enough. Will probably forget fast.

Confusing and well, bad. A couple funny moments. Lots of allusions to things. The self awareness at the beginning was a fresh change but it doesn't last.

Prometheus (2012)
Comments while watching movie: So the female scientist who is obv. extremely smart and accomplished makes a great discovery and then cries that she can not have children- such out of place melodrama and kind of insulting and sexist-it would not be nearly as acceptable for a man do that. It better have a point. Okay this movie has taken a turn for the worse and fucking weird and icky. not at all what i thought it would be, not into this shit. very bad and kind of disgusting. its basically a monster porno- nothing like sunshine (the first part). Advertized as some epic thing but really just aliens killing people in space. No good characters. Seen it before, pathetic film making. I guess the special effects are notable but that's it. Really though, major surgery and shes running around?

Save the Date (2012)
I actually forgot I had seen this movie not even a month after seeing it but it is not completely awful, it's just the wasted potential makes it even worse.

Comments while watching it (spoilers):
The whole making her pregnant thing and then the are you sure it's not mine, blood over bond crap just annoyed me. It's nearing the end and so far the best part of the movie is probably the healthiest relationship I've ever seen portrayed on film between her sister and fiancee. Her commitment issues have yet to be explained. How can you make a movie about something and not explain why it is there? +I do not get the art. +The implicit pro-life message. And she commits to a relationship at the end after a life changing trip to the abortion clinic! Not worth watching. At least the dialogue was realistically written and acted.

Side Effects (2013)
This movie is not at all what I thought it would be. It's not original or interesting, I didn't care about the characters. To give you an indication-spoiler- there is a lesbian sex scene between a psychiatrist and her patient which comes out of no where and...bad.

Comments while watching (spoilers):
I was expecting a different movie. The trailer leads you to believe the psychiatrist is more obsessed with his patient in a romantic way. Thought it would be better. Good score. Character development should have been so much more. Some things never explained. I would have cared about the patient more if I was given more information to do so. The doctor was supposed to be the main character but I didn't feel at all celebratory when he succeeded in the end.
I did not get the humor of this movie but after watching it I did feel oddly active for some reason.

Comments while watching it: The main character is SOO fucking annoying and her turn around takes 2 seconds. Had to keep watching to figure out what the hell the point was. Basically a movie about the movie? I don't get it. Is there something to get? Awful.

Comments while watching movie: I thought this was another cliche filled movie but 50:00! Hhaha, he's perfect as an asshole and the asshole's point in the movie is to do what people don't want him to do. It's just such a good subversion. A twist/self awareness of the cliche. If you're gonna be watching a coming of age movie this would be the way to do it. And Patricia Arquette! - I just find that utterly dispicable that you would have sex with a girl knowing that you could get her pregnant. Wtf how is somebody robbing them her fault? Was she supposed to be physically watching the safe? stupid moment. Why would she think it was him? A crowbar was used, not a key- perhaps the script is confused. no supposed to give me my romance fix. nooo. well if it's point was to take the cliche and make it real, it could have been, you know, a little more real and less corny. nope bad ending. damnit. the premise... so much more could have been done.. can i get a different movie with the same idea? hollywood does it all the time. of a girl making herself grow up but without the popcorn cliches? i can't believe the movie basically abandons what makes it interesting- like oops bad idea, nevermind. i think this movie got confused about what the hell it was- is it a remake of the cliches or trying to fight them? how can it think it can be both? i mean it's interesting doing difficult actions for 'your story'. what the hell was the point of trevor's story line? grrr grrr grrr.

Serenity (2005)
This is not an end to the show Firefly. This is an extra couple episodes of Firefly. As someone who wanted the loose ends tied up by the movie, I'm kind of upset.

Major spoilers:

So given a movie to end the series they used it to kill off two characters and basically seal up no ends. And no fucking Inara+Mal kiss? fuck this. I don't think one character cried after Walsh's death and if you're not going to emotionally exploit the situation just why the fuck did you make him die? No, no, no.

Little Birds (2016)
My comments as I was watching the movie (spoilers...I guess):

Looked forward to this movie but kind of boring. Lily is aggressive, belittling, self involved, and overly emotional. Kind of dislike her a lot. These guys are obviously off as if Lily would be so naive, ugh maybe. Great acts of random violence in the streets, sure it will end well for you babies. now im watching a movie about stupid people, my patience is thinning. alison is the only likeable character so why doesnt she start doing something interesting. why the fuck would she start making out w someone she doesnt like bc her friend told her to. what is wrong with her? i dont understand her actions. number of likeable characters: 0. number of interesting events: 0ish. bored and annoyed. okay a) no self esteem, no nothing, b) how can you make out with someone that passionately who is just lying there??? you followed your crazy jerk friend to go meet up with some strange boys in an unknown place-yay, im sure that was going to end up empowering you. the most powerful emotions in this film so far involve cruelty to animals which is a cheap emotional trick. do something with your fucking characters to invoke emotion besides telling stories of bad shit happening to helpless animals. kk. should i stop watching? there have been a few kind of sweet instances depicting young love but the characters are so vapid-it's just not a good movie. if i love movies and then hate them for their endings, what are the chances i will love a movie that is bad but which (will so definitely not) may have a good ending? all these characters have emotional issues. and not the good kind, just the fucked up, get away from me kind. is this entire movie to depict that the person who is called the "baby" is generally smarter, that idiots goad? bc it's a thin premise for 80 minutes. how we hide our great emotions- "whatever". i just dont want to watch a movie where all the drama is the result of extreme, extreme stupidity and the idiocy which is attributed to youth (which is unfair). giving the finger to strangers, fascination with violence, aggression, cruidity, sex obsession- just fuck off movie. i hate these people in real life, i dont want to watch a movie about them. its just this movie should be my type-wtf, 2 young people traveling, growing up, having rom, having fun- this is shit. shes gonna end up raped and there's going to be some pseudo depth lala. i just want to see something happen with that alison girl but 1h, 7 min. in hasnt shown any growth at all. im out. i imagine the premise to be: shitty people, shitty things happen to them, movie ends, you assume they grow a bit but are not shown it and the worst has already happened to them. idiots unable to communicate. alright so i'm weak, ill keep watching. just tell him to leave you stupid idiot, he's obv. unstable. what normal person wants to be used as bait for perverts. i cant believe they actually show her as not fighting at all, as just lying there. WHAT THE FUCK, THIS IS SERIOUSLY INSULTING. yeah she shot him for her- might have been an interesting part if the characters could actually scrape some depth out of themselves which they don't- i don't understand any of 'em. good ending speech, icky movie. there is no resolution to their issues, i don't get the point of this movie, the plot. how dare they make such a shallow movie in my supposed genre. there is no growth, your understanding of their relationship and the characters do not deepen through out the entire film- what you get in the beginning stays static. ugghh so irritated. could have just watched a TATU music video (swear the characters might even be more developed in that 3 minutes than here.)

I knew I wouldn't like this so I have no excuses. I just really wanted to see the chemistry between the actors. Formulaic fill-in-the-blank romantic comedy with some just basically insane ideas on marriage.

Skateland (2011)
This movie is a mess. I hate the light treatment of death in film and I hate it when death is used as a cliched plot device. It was like the movie was ignoring the fact they'd just killed off one of its characters- he goes practice driving with his sister after a near fatal car accident which killed his best friend? Um... It's like let's kill him, okay now a few scenes where the actors frown, and now back to the disco music!

This movie seems to be trying to treat itself like it's indie/original but it's nothing you haven't seen before. I would have loved to watch a movie which thought the drama of an existential crisis could stand on its own without the cliches. (The existential crisis is never actually solved really, unless you consider moving to Texas with a girl you like the solution to questions of what you're going to do with your life. He got into university but earlier in the film he said he had no idea what he wanted to study .) I will say there's one cute rom. scene between the two leads but it definitely is not worth watching this for.

+ One of the first scenes in the movie was the camera zooming in on a woman's butt- just why. + Kind of dripping with traditional gender roles I'm sick of seeing.

I can't even remember this movie, though I watched it recently. For the reason of my dislike let's just go with my being offended by the movie's depiction of vegetarianism/veganism.

Ah, starting to remember some of my irritation now. Yeah, a romance between a vegetarian and a butcher. It reminds me of a recent book cover I read on a feminist falling in love with a traditional cowboy. Something about using passionate political issues as a forbidden love plot device definitely pisses me off. It denigrates the issues. That the movie insists that these two absolutely dissimilar characters fall in love- just don't watch it.

I fell asleep watching this movie in the movie theater. When I tried to watch it again a couple years later it also didn't keep my interest. Just not my cup of tea, s'pose.

Shelter (2007)
Why does this have such a high rating? The acting is bad and the chemistry between them is also not good. Compare this movie to something like the Weekend and it looks like absolute crap. It's formulaic, filled with cliches, and the characters definitely aren't distinct- there's pretty shallow character development.
I mean, there are a couple good aspects to it: There's a slight surfing element so you get to see the sun setting on the beach through out the movie. + I liked how it didn't have those full blown overreactions so many movies use to draw out the drama. ex) The character will be kind of mean/wanting to hide his sexuality and the other guy will just make a face and accept it. His friends inexplicably know when they start seeing each other and are also accepting. I just felt a sense of relief from that. I'm so used to movies exploiting every potential moment of friction. I think all those scenes where a misunderstanding leads to a breakup and they refuse, refuse to talk about it even though supposedly they have such strong feelings for each other, have permanently messed up the way I watch movies.

I had to pause it multiple times because I couldn't get through it. I suppose it's a message on there being nothing wrong with the gay family, which I agree with, but this movie just isn't very good. (Did they ever even show the conversation with his boyfriend where they discussed raising a kid together? Or was it just like Shaun's such a good guy, of course he would do it. That's just not realistic enough for me.

Another movie which is good until half way through when it starts to be wrap up/climax time and the movie falls apart. Pacific Rim (2013)
Acting not so good, cheezy. I fast forwarded through a lot of the fight scenes. How much monster vs. robot can you watch? I watched it because I heard the rom was good but not really. The characters aren't developed enough. Charlie Day's scenes were amusing though. I like that they didn't kiss at the end. The huggy look was better. Plus, just because a man and a woman get along in a movie shouldn't always mean they have to be romantic. They had good chemistry...But the movie was baaaaddd.

It had some funny moments but the characters aren't carved out enough to be memorable and the story doesn't go anywhere. The idea of a neurotic group of friends experiencing the end of the world together is promising but it doesn't deliver. The film Melancholia is much better.

The Godfather (1972)
Male centric, all important characters men.
Women mostly decoration, around men. Represent family. When shown, shown in domestic role or as love interests. Not included in family business somehow.
Women often shown outside of knowledge of events, sometimes comedically. Ignorant of what matters.
In cases of female victimhood- shown in beginning and explicitly in sister scene. Women do not have agency to avenge. Men avenge for them and the pain of women's abuse is made their pain. Kind of progressive but also not. Shows pain of domestic abuse but main actor accused of it and yet they gave him employment. Irony.
Domestic violence scene. When she finds out he's cheating, holds knife so ineffectually.
Mother character not shown, just referenced. Only see her back up until mid of the movie. Completely patriarchal.
Movie based on plot of feuding families but no great moral seems to come of it?
+Racism
Piece of patriarchal media history.

... Truthfully, I do not like most of the movies I watch. This is because I like to have popcorn movies on in the background and I usually feel too tired to watch a movie I think will actually make an attempt at depth. So, it's a long list.

Movies I didn't like to the extent I wish I could erase them from my brain (mostly at least).
