M*A*S*H
Directed by: Robert Altman
Written by: Richard Hooker & Ring Lardner Jr.
I saw Alan Alda in the role of Hawkeye before seeing the film, and really didn't warm to Donald Sutherland at all. That said, the first half of the film was enjoyable, but then it seemed to lose its way, becoming almost farcical. The shower scene seemed very cruel, and then the football game seemed to suggest that Margaret was nothing more than an airhead, which is far from the truth. Unlikeable yes (perhaps more in the series), a tart perhaps (again perhaps more from the series), but a bimbo she isn't.

I'm not sure I'd have bothered with the series if I'd have seen this first. The one nice thing was learning what a couple of things related to: the theme tune and where the name 'Hotlips' came from. It only gets a three from me because it was saved somewhat by the first half. Perhaps my view is tainted by catching it in the wrong order, but this one wasn't really for me, perhaps I just prefer the human side that is more in focus in the television series.

We've had to split this into series sections, because half of the code disappears when you hit edit if there is too much of it.

Republished since now complete.

This is probably the biggest single list project that we've attempted, and will probably remain so... but I have a habit of getting preoccupied and not getting stuff watched (the huge pile of unwatched DVD's is proof of that), so this was a good way to drive me on.

Two weeks... a film and 251 episodes... the journey is complete.

This list has:
1. An image, details and score for every single episode.
2. A little about the main characters, including a bit of opinion.
3. Some images of other characters.
4. Images of some of Hawkeye's lovely nurses.
5. Potter's Paintings
6. Some of Klinger's clothes.

We only got into M*A*S*H recently after catching episodes on TV, and we now own it, I just had to see it complete and in order... and I'm glad I did, I hadn't seen the finale, and having seen the whole journey in such a short space of time, it packed extra punch... I bet those 125 million people who tuned in must have loved it in 1983, but over thirty years later... it's still brilliant! The series as a whole is superb, it has low points... it's bound to, you can't get it spot on 251 times... it doesn't work that way. It started slowly for us, just a bit too silly, but it got going by the third series, and didn't really let off until near the end. I know some didn't like the more serious issue-led stuff, but I think it balanced nicely against the comedy that was on offer. I'm not a huge fan of American comedy... but M*A*S*H? Bloody brilliant, not that it's pure comedy anyway, I think Shelley Long called it "dramedy" in one of the programmes included as an extra. If you are reading this, and you've enjoyed an episode or two... do yourself a favour... buy it, and don't listen to those who say how badly it's aged, some things will always be great... and this is one of them.

Apologies for any poorly written opinions here, I'm not a reviewer, never have been, never will be, just not my thing. I prefer to leave that to people who need to be heard.

We each rated the episodes out of five, to get a score out of 10.
