Dancer in the Dark (2000)

Icelandic singer Bjork plays Selma, a Czechoslovakian immigrant in the early sixties who is turning blind and saving up by working as much as she can for an operation for her son, who suffers from the same disease as her.
The acting here is flawless, starting with Bjork, and the supporting actors (Catherine Deneuve, Peter Stormare, David Morse...)are just as believable. It has a documentary approach, almost, with its nervous camera, random close-ups which really made me feel as if I was standing next to the characters. Soundtrack is signed by Bjork, whose character is an admirer of Hollywood musicals, and the choreography are just clumsy and unsynchronized enough to make you believe that the characters spontaneously decided to dance.
It is BEAUTIFUL, and you will cry and sob very loudly because this story is simply heart-breaking.

Monster (2003)

Remember 2003? Monster was all over the media, and not only because of its content: people were amazed by how beautiful Charlize Theron transformed into killer Aileen Wuornos, for which she gained 30 pounds and wore contact lenses and prosthetic dentures.
Aileen Wuornos was a prostitute who murdered seven men between 1989 and 1990. Before being executed by lethal injection, she collaborated with the film director by giving him access to hundreds of letters.
What is so tragic there is Aileen's devotion and love to younger girlfriend Selby (Christina Ricci), and how messed-up her quest for happiness and a normal life is.
I watched the movie with my mom and my sisters when it came out on VHS. When it ended, we were all staring at the credits in silence, sharing a box of Kleenex.

The moving tale of an old and lonely man struggling to keep his room in post-war Italy, with nothing more to his life than his Jack Russel dog and the illegitimately pregnant housemaid.
The Notebook (2004)

Some guys simply won't watch it. I guess that it's a question of principle or macho pride or something. Well, guys, to not watch a love story because it's a love story = being close-minded, and that is not sexy.
"The Notebook" may not be a great movie, it is a great love movie. There is undeniable chemistry between the main actors and, trust me, you will cry like a baby. I cried for over an hour the first time I watched it. Even my boyfriend wiped a tear or two, and that was sexy as hell.
Titanic (1997)

Where do I start? As a literature and cinema student, I hear so many horrible things about this blockbuster and yet, I love it.
So, what can I say? Thousands of people losing their life within a few hours, locked up in a sinking boat in the middle of the ocean, is tragic enough to move pretty much anyone. I wasn't into the Dicaprio-Winslet romance at first, but I grew into living it. You may not get to spend much time with a person, but they can still change your life forever.
