Greece is considered the cradle of Western civilization, having been the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, Western literature, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama.
In 146 BC Greece was annexed to Rome, and became a Roman protectorate. Despite their military superiority, the Romans admired and became heavily influenced by the achievements of Greek culture, hence Horace's famous statement: Graecia capta ferum victorem cepit ("Greece, although captured, took its wild conqueror captive".) Greece was invaded repeatedly. The Barbarian invasion, the Goths, the Huns, the Slavic invasion. Then came the partial Venetian possessions and the Byzantine Empire, from the 15th century to 1821. Apparently everyone wanted a piece. In 1821 the Greek War of Independence began. It ended in 1832.
