The origins of glassmaking in Murano go back to the times of the Roman Empire when molded glass was used for illumination in bathhouses. In the mid 1200's the artisans working in the glass trade were well rewarded for their efforts. They had a privileged social status, and their daughters were allowed to marry into the wealthiest and noblest of Venetian families. However, glass-making couldn't be allowed to leave Murano.
Then there's the world known Venice Carnival, which was first recorded in 1268. The subversive nature of the festival is reflected in the many laws created over the centuries in Italy attempting to restrict celebrations and often banning the wearing of masks.
