Succession (2018)

1.

The winner.

2.

Lock.

3.

Saved by the fact that this category ended up much thinner than expected. Should make it in one last time.

4.

Despite a lackluster season that has already been forgotten, The Crown should score another nomination for its name recognition alone. Could be the snub of the year here, so look out.

5.

I'm not as sold on this show's chances as most, but this field is really thin, and the series was a rating juggernaut with strong critical notices. Probably in.

6.

Another show that could've been killed by it's release date but saved due to lack of options, HBO's successful prequel should score a nomination for its inaugural season. Reviews were solid, ratings strong, and the GOT luster likely still shines (despite the backlash, later seasons of that show still did incredibly well).

7.

Probably in, but Yellowjackets could be another high-profile snub. Response to the sophomore season grew much more mixed as the season went on, muted the goodwill the show needed to make the cut last year. Add to that Showtime's woes, and some interesting contenders that could steal some heat. and it's no lock. Voters don't changeover much though, so I do expect to see it back one more time. Season 3 better right the ship.

8.

The Mandalorian muddies Andor's chances. While the new drama was immediately heralded as the best thing to happen to the Star Wars universe in years, The Mandalorian has done very well here. Nominations for it's first two seasons, winning 14 awards overall; it's got juice. It's third season was an exceedingly mixed bag though, and Andor is clearly the better show. That doesn't always matter, but I think it eeks in over it's predecessor.

Other Possibilities

10.

It's won before, and been nominated for it's previous four seasons, but the fifth season came so long ago, with so little acclaim (it hasn't received any major precursor nominations). Could surprise, but feels like an afterthought.

11.

Scored a surprise nod here two years ago, but that was a thin, COVID-impacted field, and the third season didn't really build on the critic response of the second (well-received, but didn't make a jump). Also, the show's third season ended a full year ago; it's not the strongest field, but that's a long while to stay fresh in voters' minds. I'm also curious if The Boys is even Amazon's prime awards push this year. I'd wager their pushing Lord of the Rings harder, which isn't really smart (House of the Dragon continually bodied it critically), but seems smart to them.

12.

Could make it in (some people are going really hard predicting it), but the show's fifth season came and went a while ago, with the behind-the-scenes drama overwhelming the on-screen stuff. Also, if it couldn't make the cut last year, when there was a lot of heat and major precursor love (SAG, PGA), it'd be wild to see it make the cut this time. Add in Sheridan's dickish WGA comments, as well as his other show 1923 taking some heat away, and I just don't see it.

Ted Lasso (2020)

1.

It was a polarizing season, but they're not going to snub the two-time winner for what likely its final season.

2.

Locked in. Network's best shot at a win in years.

3.

It might need to shift categories next year, but The Bear is here this time and it's looking to do some damage. It scored all of the precursors it needed to (including PGA and WGA wins), and it's second season was strategically released to coincided with voting. Should do very well this year.

4.

Came and went almost a full year ago, but this is still one of the few "funny" series left here. Wasn't as overwhelmingly beloved as season 1, but was still warmly received, and scored all of the necessary precursor nominations. Should be in.

5.

Mrs. Maisel should score a goodbye nomination. It's not going to win, and the final season's structure likely led to some derision, but this is a thinner field this year with, maybe, 10 legit contenders for eight spots. There could be a snub here, but it would be surprising to see the former winner miss for it's last time out.

6.

Was it too abstract? Was the narrative to slim? Was it just too dark? I think Bill Hader's crime-comedy opus will get one more nomination, but I could certainly see a surprise snub. The second half of the season seemed somewhat polarizing, with a more muted finale than expected. Again, this is a thin year and should go out with one more nomination based on respect and admiration for Hader and Co.'s work, but it wouldn't be the biggest surprise to see it miss.

7.

I don't know how much stock I put in Peacock's campaigning abilities, but Poker Face was a throwback hit for the streamer, a crossover hit that scratched the old "howdunit" itch. Natasha Lyonne is a well-liked figure with the TV Academy, too, and creator Rian Johnson has his fans. There are some legit contenders here, but I think this one's got the momentum to really do well.

8.

Wednesday was one of Netflix's biggest hits, and this category's thinnest should give a big newcomer a chance to shine. I just don't know if it's the kind of thing that would appeal to the TV academy. It's a gothic YA series that appeals to a rather young audience. Some might throw Stranger Things out to counter that, but while it's hues younger overall, it's 1980s setting hits right in the voter sweet spot. The Addams Family update does not.

Shrinking does though, and Apple is emerging as a major player in this category. It's got big names, solid buzz, and fills the the requisite endearing hole that Ted Lasso is leaving. It could do damage, but Ted Lasso isn't gone yet, and I think it'll still pull that demographic, leaving the new show behind. That leaves a few more contenders. If Atlanta had come out later, then I think it might have a better shot, but it ended a while ago, after a third season that essentially killed it's reign as a major player. The Great was well-received again, but if it couldn't make it in for it's more noteworthy two seasons, I doubt it'll make the jump for its third.

What this category needs is a straight-up comedy, built for laughs more than pathos. What We Do in the Shadows fits that bill. Its fourth season wasn't the greatest and it came and went a full year ago, but it's proven to have a strong base of support over the past few years (it's been nominated two straight times). With some many shows toeing the comedy line here (Barry and The Bear blowing right past it, often), I think they'll show love to this goofy series.

Best Limited Series

People who added this item 20 Average listal rating (8 ratings) 6.5 IMDB Rating 8.1

1.

This category could go a lot of ways, but Beef feels like the safest bet of the bunch. Netflix has a more-viewed series also here, but Beef was widely-seen and widely-beloved. Feels safe.

2.

The reviews were highly mixed (hewing more negatively), but this was one of Netflix's biggest series ever, and has scored every precursor nomination it needs. It'll probably be in.

3.

Hung on surprisingly strongly, scoring SAG nominations and a Golden Globe/Critics' Choice win. It never got top prize nominations (outside of the Globes), but that was likely do to some early 2022 series hanging on for the end-of-year awards. Should have a better shot in a somewhat frenzied field.

4.

Another series with a mixed critical reaction, Daisy Jones was, nevertheless, a hit for Amazon, and is an easy viewing that check a lot of boxes. It's not a lock by any means, but it feels like it'll get in.

5.

Fleishman is in Trouble seems to be the consensus pick here, and could very well contend, but I'm not sure it's subject matter will be broad enough for many voters to engage with. It was also a late 2022 release, with several fresher contenders in mind. Mrs. Davis was notable for Peacock, but I'm both uncertain to overall viewership for that series (the fact that it shifted to limited series doesn't instill confidence) and Peacock's ability to promote its series. George and Tammy has the biopic factor, as well as a pair of big name stars, but Showtime's had a hard time lately, and I'm not sure this one has the staying power necessary to succeed here. Love and Death and White House Plumbers have the HBO prestige, but neither popped critically or, I'm guessing, commercially. With all of this in mind, I'll go with A Small Light. It's a very hard subject matter (the Holocaust), but one that typically does well here and is, unfortunately, still relevant. Disney has also proven strong here the past few years; Nat Geo itself has an okay track record, but Disney+ and Hulu is a strong pairing (last year Hulu stole three spots here). Not my safest pick, but one I feel is right.

I don't feel confident about any of these beyond the first two. Weird scored all the precursors it needs to be considered the frontrunner.

2.

Dolly Parton's become royalty here. Probably in.

3.

Maybe. I don't know. It got strong reviews and high viewership, but I'm not sure which of Fox's Hulu dumps will catch fire here or not. This one feels the safest.

Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie

People who added this item 5 Average listal rating (1 ratings) 8 IMDB Rating 7.5

1.

Jessica Chastain- George & Tammy
Series wasn't beloved, but she is and she won the SAG award earlier this year. The category's changed a bit since then, but not enough knock her from the top spot.

2.

Ali Wong- Beef
Probably the only lock outside of Chastain.

3.

Rachel Weisz- Dead Ringers
I'd say few remember the series, but it's a pretty spread out category and Weisz is a big name. Add to that a dual role and, likely, Amazon's top push here, and she feels like a strong possibility.

4.

Elizabeth Olsen- Love & Death
The show got a muted response, but it's HBO. They've only missed this category twice in 25 years, and Olsen is, clearly, their player here (Sydney Sweeney could sneak in for Reality, but that film doesn't have much heat and it's been a whole five years since a TV movie scored a nomination here). The series could overperform or completely miss. Actress seems like their most likely play.

5.

Riley Keough- Daisy Jones and the Six
As the show's stature has grown, so too has Keough's. This is a wonky category this year, one with just a few major contenders and a lot of open space, so to have the title role in a series contender is a major plus for her. It also helps that she's one of the strongest things the series has going for it. No lock, but feeling stronger and stronger.

6.

Bel Powley- A Small Light
There are a lot of contenders for this last spot. Blunt is the consensus pick; she's well-liked, and scored a SAG nod earlier this year. I just don't know if The English has legs, especially in a category that appears as late-breaking as this one. I'm also concerned with Amazon's capability to score three nominees here, as I feel pretty confident in Weisz and Keough (that also a reason I'm unsure of Fishback here, too; also for Fishback, her series is more difficult to peg, and not exactly in line with voting habits of this category, and acting categories in general).
Lizzy Caplan has a mild shot but, again, Fleishman is another series I'm not sure will have legs. Betty Gilpin does too, but I'm not sure Mrs. Davis will be the TV Academy's cup of tea (and, again, Peacock is not a known player).

In the end, I'm left with Powley. It's a strong performance, in a strong show but, more importantly, she's Disney/Fox's biggest player (they've got Caplan, but her's feels like a minor possibility). WWII/Holocaust-themed stuff has a strong history here, and I think Powley benefits from that, as well as being fresher in voter's minds than others here (her show was a May release).

Other Possibilities

7.

Emily Blunt- The English

8.

Dominique Fishback- Swarm

9.

Sydney Sweeney- Reality

10.

Lizzy Caplan- Fleishman is in Trouble

11.

Betty Gilpin- Mrs. Davis

12.

Kathryn Hahn- Tiny Beautiful Things
May be sleeping on this one. She's well-liked, and this is a strong performance. Unlikely, but I wouldn't be stunned if she snuck in.

Best Actor in a Drama Series

People who added this item 819 Average listal rating (593 ratings) 8.9 IMDB Rating 9

1.

Jeremy Strong- Succession
With three likely Succession nominees here, they'll likely cancel each other out. That said, Strong is really the only feasible win here. Culkin is strong and Cox casts a shadow, but Strong was, once again, searing in the last season.

2.

Kieran Culkin- Succession
Lock.

3.

Bob Odenkirk- Better Call Saul
Thanks to a surprisingly thin field since Saul's end last August, Odenkirk not only looks likely for a final nomination, but could very well win if the Succession guys split the vote.

4.

Pedro Pascal- The Last of Us
Or likely first time nominee Pascal could surprise. He'll very well-liked, in a big HBO drama. He should score the nomination, at least.

5.

Brian Cox- Succession
Is there enough space for three Succession players? Even one for Cox, how was only alive on screen for a little over two episodes? It wouldn't be a big surprise to see him miss with such little screen time (he'd have probably won in supporting), but the HBO drama is going to clean up this year, and this isn't the thickest category in terms of major potential nominees. I'd say they give him one more nomination.

6.

Jeff Bridges- The Old Man
Bridges probably gets in on name recognition. It's a strong performance, but the show wasn't beloved, nor is it recent enough to be front and center in voters minds. Bridges is a beloved figure though, and there are only a few other players here. Luna could ride some love for Andor, but it's such a subtle performance that it might be hard to stand out amongst such big performances (it also doesn't help that he isn't exactly the focus of a series named after his character, often fading into the ensemble instead of leading it). Considine did strong work, but parent series Game of Thrones had a hard time scoring nominations here (only once, for the final season) at the height of it's fame; Dragon isn't winning and could even underperform. He'd need a wave for the series, and I don't see it happening. Ford could surprise, but he doesn't have much to do on 1923. He could get in on name alone, but I think there's a stronger bet for him in another category. Rhys was nominated for Mason's first season, but the second came and went with little fanfare, and was cancelled afterwards. If Costner was gonna get in, I feel like it would've happened by now.

Other Possibilities

7.

Diego Luna- Andor

8.

Paddy Considine- House of the Dragon

9.

Harrison Ford- 1923

10.

Matthew Rhys- Perry Mason

11.

Kevin Costner- Yellowstone

1.

Quinta Brunson- Abbott Elementary
Locked in. Could win.

2.

Rachel Brosnahan- The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Should score a goodbye nomination (though her win may be a disadvantage in a smaller field; she's had hers, time for the new).

3.

Christina Applegate- Dead to Me
The show doesn't have much juice this year, but Applegate is beloved. Probably in.

4.

Natasha Lyonne- Poker Face
It's a hot new show, built around her. It's a stellar performance, and she is very well-liked. Feels like a strong contender.

5.

Jenna Ortega- Wednesday
Only five spots this year. Fanning got in last year, but I'm not sure that The Great has much heat, especially enough to score her a spot in the final five (if there was six spots, I'd probably have her in). Gomez is solid, but her legendary costars take up so much space that she doesn't get to shine as much. In a thinner field, she'd be a stronger threat (maybe next year). Cardellini got a nomination for Dead to Me's second season but, again, this season has faded, and it's a more stacked category this time out. That leaves me with Ortega, who was broadly seen as the best thing about the phenomenon Wednesday. While her issues with her writers may hinder her in the middle of a writers' strike, I think she'll have enough support to score her first.

Other Possibilities

6.

Elle Fanning- The Great

7.

Selena Gomez- Only Murders in the Building

Best Actor in a Comedy Series

People who added this item 67 Average listal rating (46 ratings) 7.7 IMDB Rating 8.1

1.

Jason Sudeikis- Ted Lasso
Not sure he'll win again, but two straight means he's almost guaranteed to score a nomination.

2.

Jeremy Allen White- The Bear
He won all of the winter awards (including SAG) and the second season's universal acclaim should score him an easy nomination, even in a smaller field.

3.

Bill Hader- Barry
I don't think it'll happen, but I could see a Hader snub here. He's won two of these, and the show should still score nominations, but his characters was honestly more of a force than a man in the series' final season; motivator more than man. Again, it would be a major surprise, but it could happen.

4.

Steve Martin- Only Murders in the Building

5.

Martin Short- Only Murders in the Building
In a stronger field, I could see the OMITB legends missing. The newcomers, however (outside of White), are not the strongest, with only Jason Segel having a major shot. He could make the cut, but even those that love Shrinking are a bit mixed on his overall work. Odenkirk is beloved, but I can't imagine Lucky Hank having any resonance with the voters. Returning nominees Donald Glover and Nicholas Hoult could make the cut again, but I don't see it. Atlanta ended on a smaller note last year, and doesn't appear as though it'll have much sway this year. Not to delve into spoilers, though Hoult is strong in The Great's most recent season, he isn't out and out essential, and isn't on screen much.

Other Possibilities

6.

Jason Segel- Shrinking

7.

Donald Glover- Atlanta

8.

Nicholas Hoult- The Great
