The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
A great finish to a solid trilogy. That just doesn't happen very often.
Film Ninja's rating:

This faced the same criticisms as the initial LOTR film. However this is far more action packed than that one was! I wasn't even bothered by the 48 fps.
Film Ninja's rating:

This is the strangest film of recent years. I took it as a series of bizarre short stories that, when viewed as a whole, mean absolutely nothing. Or perhaps everything? I can't tell.
Film Ninja's rating:

The Avengers (2012)
There is nothing ground breaking about Avengers. All Joss Whedon did was live up to expectations here - but those expectations were SO astronomical that this movie will be a blueprint for play-it-safe, mega budget, summer blockbusters for decades to come. Much like its competitor blockbuster "John Carter" will be the blueprint for what not to do.
Film Ninja's rating:

Every year or two, I can count on seeing a fantastic low budget neo-realism style film. Usually they come out of Europe, but this one is an American masterpiece, along the lines of such great films as Winter's Bone and Chop Shop.
Film Ninja's rating:

In the year of "darker and grittier" remakes - where even Spiderman had to be "Twilighted" - its nice to see a pleasant story about love and adventure. Thank you Wes Anderson for releasing the ONLY film this year without Vampires, Superheroes or Abe Lincolns.
Film Ninja's rating:

Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
A somewhat messy depiction of the hunt for UBL (why not OBL?). The story is completely skewed towards one particular CIA agent's journey and doesn't really do justice to the military's part in the story. However, viewing it as a modern day "Battle of Algiers", this is a fascinating piece of cinema.
Film Ninja's rating:

Evil monsters who killed thousands of people recall their horrific acts. It's amazing how honestly and even proudly they discuss their crimes.
Film Ninja's rating:

Ted (2012)
Raunchy comedy is so predictable and overdone that we only see one as good as Ted every decade or so. If you were laughing at the kid's "Temple of Doom" poster in the first scene, then you were laughing non-stop for the next 2 hours, like I was. The film is so polished that it feels like Seth MacFarlane should have been making R-rated comedies all along!
Film Ninja's rating:

Looper (2012)
Art house sci-fi time travel film. Perhaps the plot is flawed and confusing, but the story is told in an interesting way. At least this film avoids all the old time travel cliches.
Film Ninja's rating:

Top what? I decided to list all the 9 and 10 star rated movies (based on my own ratings) of each year instead of trying to make a list of exactly 10. Some years may have 1 and some may have 20 in the list. It depends on the amount of good movies I saw from that year - but even more it hopefully reflects the amount of decent movies that were actually made in a particular year.
I have included a small explanation for people who may not have heard of the film.
Lists will constantly change as I see more films.
