The Phoenix doesn't control fire in the traditional sense, it's actually cosmic energy that only looks like fire. Still, the Phoenix is tasked with protecting the cosmos by burning away that which refuses to evolve. The Phoenix Force is feared throughout the cosmos, having caused untold destruction. Keep in mind, however, the Phoenix also represents rebirth and positive change; as it was through it that Hope Summers was able to bring back the mutant race from the brink of extinction at the end of Avengers vs. X-Men.

By channeling the power of the Firestorm Matrix, Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein combine into one being: Firestorm.

One of the most powerful heroes on Earth, Firestorm can not only create and manipulate heat and flames but also gaining the ability to affect and transmute inorganic (and in some cases organic) matter on a molecular level. Essentially, so long as he knows the elemental makeup of the matter he’s trying to affect, he can change it into whatever his little hearts desire. Such was his power that there even was an arms race, both in comics and in TV, to develop Firestorm technology.

As befitting of her title as a "Fire Witch", Ayaka specializes in fire magic, to the point even her entire body is made of fire. Her already enormous power is increased if she is assumes her Overdrive form; where her body is surrounded by flames and she can summon a dragon as a familiar. Other than her obsession with her love interest Honoka Takamiya, Ayaka maintains a stoic, taciturn expression at all times; subverting the common expectation of a traditional fire-based hero.

Of all the Firebenders in the show, Zuko stands out as the most iconic and human.

He has an encyclopedia's worth of emotional issues, which he channels with his immense firebending skills. After much soul-searching, Zuko rediscovers the original firebending discipline, one that focuses on self-control and inner peace instead of anger and violence. This significantly increases his powers and facilitates his redemption.

Series: Pokémon

Of all the Fire-type Pokémon in the series, I had to go with the most iconic.

Known as the Flame Pokémon, Charizard looks and behaves like a traditional dragon. He is short-tempered, honorable and is always on the lookout for opponents who can give him a good fight. His fire powers can be significantly increased with his Mega Evolutions in Generation VI.

You should know this already.

Traditionally, Mario has fire powers with by using the Fire Flower, giving him an alternative to stomping his enemies. The spin-off games often give Mario fire abilities that don't require the Fire Flower to be activated. His Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. is a huge torrent of twin flames. In any case, Mario does fit the image of the archetypical fire-based hero: aggressive, hot-blooded and supremely motivated.

If you're not happy with tradtional fire, maybe hellfire is what you're looking for.

After being killed, Scorpion was resurrected as a demonic warrior with the ability to control hellfire. This gives him an edge in the middle of a fight, either by moving really fast or by incinerating enemies with his Toasty fatality. In Mortal Kombat X, Scorpion regains his human form but his fire powers remain the same, perhaps even stronger.

Firestar initially starred alongside Iceman as one Spider-Man’s “amazing friends” on Saturday morning cartoons, until she made her transition into comic books. A mutant who generates intense heat and gains the ability to fly by generating and manipulating microwave radiation, Angelica Jones is not your typical flamethrower. Unlike most other entries on our list, Firestar doesn’t enjoy complete immunity to her own powers and has suffered through breast cancer previously in her career. Although she was lucky enough to have her cancer cured through Daimon Hellstrom’s demonic intervention, she presumably remains at risk of future relapse.

St. John Allerdyce is a mutant with the power to control fire only. He cannot actually create fire himself, however, and consequently wears a specially insulated costume with a built-in flamethrower that can throw a stream of flame. Originally, he was a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and came into conflict with the X-Men multiple times. Later, he and his teammates got a full pardon and became a hero. In his final moments, he saves Senator Robert Kelly from an assassination attempt, managing to change Kelly's opinion on mutants as a whole. Unfortunately, he was resurrected by Selene and made part of her army of undead mutants.

If you know your Marvel history, he isn't the first Human Torch (that was Jim Hammond), but he is certainly the most famous.

The Fantastic Four's resident matchstick, Johnny Storm obtained his powers after being hit by cosmic radiation. Like any traditional fire-based hero, Johnny is hot-headed, impulsive and likes to act on instinct. His flames can reach temperatures rivaling that of the sun, he can fly at supersonic speeds and is even immune to any sources of flame and heat, even his own fire.

Shiro Yashida is a mutant solar reactor and a hothead with a fiery temper that gets him into trouble more often than not. Although somewhat stereotypical of a character of Japanese origin (he obviously also knows several martial arts and hangs with the Yakuza), it does usually land him on the side of the angels. Sunfire's powers have fluctuated over the years from his signature solar fired plasma generation to image-inducing flares as Apocalypse’s Horseman, Famine. Most recently, as a member of the Uncanny Avengers, he showed the ability to convert his body into pure energy, whatever that means.

These people took the term "playing with fire" and ran away with it.

Since time immemorial, humanity has been fascinated with the power of fire and has created legendary characters that can manipulate heat in one way or another. Today, we choose the hottest of them all.

RULES
1- Vote for your favorite 5 in top-to-bottom order
2 - Characters will receive votes as follows
1st place = 5 pts
2nd place = 4 pts
3rd place = 3 pts
and so on,...
3 -Only characters whose primary element is fire are permitted. Characters who can control several elements at once (Captain Planet, Aang, etc.) are for another list.
4 - If you don't see one of your favorites, vote for them anyway and I'll add them to the list.
5 - Votes will only be valid if users add vote for the list itself. Only adding votes to the comments section is not enough.
