Introducing your male lead by having him stone-cold murder an innocent to avoid capture is an appropriate way to set the stakes, though I disagree with most that Rogue One would somehow do an exceptional job in showcasing that war is hell. Unlike the other prequels that isn't Revenge of the Sith, this one is actually really good. The new characters were fleshed out well enough with K-2SO and Chirrut being the best ones and it does tell an interesting new story.
