A watchable horror movie, despite its flaws
“The latest addition to the vastly profitable Conjuring-Verse, 2018's The Nun represents another spinoff that further exploits an evil entity originally introduced in one of the franchise's main movies. Putting away the Annabelle doll for a change, The Nun flashes back to the early 1950s to reveal more about the demonic nun figure from 2016's The Conjuring 2, with long-time series screenwriter Gary Dauberman (Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation) endeavouring to write an entire feature film based on this anaemic concept. "A disappointing spin-off to the Conjuring movies full of the usual jump scares but this story is hardly frightening. It's a shame as the sets look great especially the huge nunnery which resemble Hogwarts Castle and the surrounding area. The atmosphere is also great so the groundwork was there for this to be a very creepy movie. At times the movie does work too, but that is mainly when it is being subtle. "First viewing - Sept. 15th In short, The Nun is better than Annabelle: Creation but falls short of the excellence of the first two Conjuring movies. There's a graveyard scene that's pretty inventive and the strongest moment in the entire film. Casting Vera Farmiga's sister in her role helps sell that we're still watching the same character, and she does a solid job. The vibe of the film worked for me, and so I was able to enjoy it.
