The director made an inspired guess: telling about Rasputin through a sort of documentary and "paintings on the move": framed shots that run the screen in various directions. It'd be very fascinating if it was a short film, but creating a feature film where 90% of the audio is voice-over and "normal" scenes are almost absent was - in my opinion - a fatal mistake.
